Juvenile Literature. Young Adult Fiction. HTML:

When families break down, it's a moment of truth. A compelling new young adult novel from the author of the 2006 CBCA Honour Book NO WORRIES. 'I'm an ocean cliff. He's erosion. I feel a large part of me crumbling into the sea, yet somehow I don't mind at all.' Caitlin and David have much in common. They're the same age, they go to the same school, they're both in the school play. And each of them is watching their family fall apart. It's a violent situation, but violence isn't always physical, and neither are threats. In their own ways, Caitlin and David are in it together, but separate. And somewhere, somehow, inevitably, it all has to come to a head. With GIVE ME TRUTH, Bill Condon has written another powerful, memorable novel for young people, with characters who stay with the reader long after the last page is turned.

The two 16 yo main characters (male and female) have their respective family's breaking up. A dual narrative in alternate chapters. Both seek the truth behind the break-ups - so young people being caught in the middle / narratives and sides associated with breakups. ( )

This is a realistic story about teenagers dealing with potential family breakdown and perhaps worse. David and Caitlin each tell their story in alternate chapters, including meeting at play rehearsal. But the focus of the stories stays on family and the hopes of the children to keep their parents together.

This is a realistically told story and does not shrink from some scenes of violence. Condon succeeds in showing us both adult and teen characters with whom we can empathise. He leaves us to assess the rights and wrongs, or just to understand the difficulty of getting things right in relationships.

The two stories start to converge in a way that we can see happening, but this increases the tension and our engagement rather than spoiling it. The end is skillfully satisfying and somewhat open ended, allowing the reader to consider what may likely happen. Recommended. ( )
