Sequestered in the blackness of the dreaded Tower of High Sorcery in Palanthas, surrounded by nameless creatures of evil, Raistlin Majere weaves a plan to conquer the darkness--to bring it under his control. Crysania, a beautiful and devoted cleric of Paladine, tries to use her faith to lead Raistlin from the darkness. She is blind to his shadowed designs, and he draws her slowly into his neatly woven trap. Made aware of Raistlin's plan, a distraught Caramon travels back in time to the doomed city of Istar in the days before the Cataclysm. There, together with the ever-present kender Tasslehoff, Caramon will make his stand to save Raistlin's soul. Or so he believes.… (més)

The Dragonlance books aren't exactly the most demanding series, but there is something fantastic about the world and characters that Weis and Hickman have created. Time of the Twins scales back on the number of characters, but it does so to focus on two of the most interesting. ( )

I was never a reader of epic fantasy... and then I discovered the Dragonlance books and never looked back.

I feel kinda bad that it has taken me thirty years to finally get around to reading this second main Dragonlance trilogy. I mean, sure, it took me fifteen years to read the first Dragonlance trilogy and that was AFTER I had been playing D&D for years. Oops? Ah, but never mind that.

I discovered something awesome. This reads BETTER than the first trilogy. A lot more fun, more interesting, better characters (and not just Tolkien ripoffs), and a much more twisted story.

No, this isn't a classic fantasy in most cases... but then... maybe it IS. Raistlin has that VIBE. Originally a dark hero master magician, like Elric from Moorcock's series, Raistlin is, in some ways, a lot more interesting, evil, and sympathetic than Elric. Awesomely powerful by the end of the original Trilogy, he's insufferably cocky and sure he could take over the world in a single day in this one. So he gets more ambitious. As in taking out the Dark Goddess to become a God, himself.

In the meantime, his twin brother, a brawny, broken oaf of a warrior and pretty much Raistlin's opposite, has his own redemption arc going on because he let himself go to seed. Big time. And then we get a full corruption of a good cleric, time travel, Kinder mischief, and a big return to the awesomely big cataclysm from the Dragonlance's ancient past. And we get to see it from the ringside seats.

Awesome? I think so.

Let me be clear, however. I have only a little patience for money-grubbing franchises and the D&D series as a whole definitely qualifies. I had some issues with the original trilogy, but somehow this book kinda pushes all my reservations aside.

I had FUN. A lot of fun. And the writing is not bad at all. :) I can't wait to see the big, big events I've already been spoiled on by old friends back years ago. :) ( )

I had fond memories of the Dragonlance 'Chronicles', but it was the 'Legends' trilogy that stuck with me through the years. Time travel, deep lore, and epic battles form a backdrop to a pair of seriously screwed up brothers.

At the end of 'Dragons of Spring Dawning' Raistlin had come into some serious power and had dismissed Caramon from his life. Caramon, having protected and cared for his brother his whole life clearly is not happy about the situation, but goes off into the sunset with Tika. At the true start of 'Time' we see a harried Tika and a Caramon who is, literally, unrecognizable.

The actual start of the novel spends some time with Raistlin enjoying his Dark Sinister Powers, a 'loyal' apprentice, and a plot involving a powerful, but inexperienced, cleric of Paladine. Crystania swoons over Raistlin and his musk of roses, blood, and death, and starts her own plot to win him back over to the side of good. In doing this she get entangled with Tasslehoff and a seriously out of condition Caramon. A jaunt back to just before the Cataclysm seems inevitable.

For the most part the book holds up and, for many reasons, 'Time of the Twins' is a superior book to anything in the 'Chronicles' series, and yet, the luster has worn off and, honestly, I wasn't seeing the world-building here that I was expecting. In previous books whole adventure arcs would be skipped over with a mention, and it worked, but the actual epic scenes on screen here were fun, but not powerful.

I'm going to keep going, but I remember that after this trilogy the Dragonlance universe gets really complicated, insular, and much of it not written by Weis and Hickman gets contradicted and retconned down the line.

After reading the original DragonLance trilogy, for me this one came next. This series explores events only briefly referred to in the original trilogy and expands on what Raistlin is trying to do - no matter what his twin Caramon wants. I thought this was a great series. ( )
