Excellent! It takes place in the 11th century, not the 3rd. The main character is an associate of William II of France and England.

Really long! I've read 400+ pages, and am taking a break. (

This is an excellent read! Durham has written a long, but spellbinding narrative of the 3rd Century. Flambard is a Priest, Confessor to the King, Scribe, and of all things, Tax Collector. It is this role that eventually gets him in trouble. After the king dies, Flambard, having lost his protector, is flung into prison. It is here that he writes his Confesion, detailing his life in the Church and Court. If you like 900+ page epic novels, this is the read for you. (
