This is an excellent book about the people & history of the Brazilian Amazon forest through the eyes of Col. Fawcett who thrived there and the modern search for the city of Z & the Fawcetts who never returned, including how people can die in a myriad of horrific ways there & how to prepare human meat (yea). Continually interesting and far better than the movie, which gave an inaccurate & boring portrayal of Fawcett. Narration is a bit monotone at the beginning of the audiobook but did improve. ( ![]() History of Western attempts to find the amazing city they thought was hidden in the Amazon, up to contemporary anthropological understandings of how people might have been able to create complex societies in a place that is shockingly hostile to human existence. If you can’t deal with lots of descriptions of how people suffered and died, skip it, but I found it grimly fascinating. Gripping, fun, informative I'm about 36% of the way through this book. I've always preferred my adventures in colder/higher altitude loccales and this book reconfirms my total lack of desire to spend time in tropical climates at all. Great read if you like adventure genre. Completed the book this weekend. Even though the outcome was known the author was able to carry the suspense of any discoveries into the details till near the end. An enjoyable (from an adventurer's viewpoint) read. The shifting viewpoint from one expedition to another was a bit disconcerting at times, but maybe this little bit of brief literary confusion actually adds to the read, in this case. Overall the readers should recognize the all-to-familiar story line of what can result from obsession. I listened to most of this as an audiobook and I so dreaded it that I had to make myself listen to it. Not worth it; more entertaining things to read/learn. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya

After stumbling upon a hidden trove of diaries, New Yorker writer David Grann set out to solve "the greatest exploration mystery of the twentieth century": what happened to British explorer Percy Fawcett. In 1925 Fawcett ventured into the Amazon to find an ancient civilization. For centuries Europeans believed the world's largest jungle concealed the glittering El Dorado. Thousands had died looking for it, leaving many convinced that the Amazon was truly inimical to humankind. But Fawcett had spent years building his scientific case. Captivating the imagination of millions, he embarked with his 21-year-old son, determined to prove that this ancient civilization--which he dubbed "Z"--existed. Then he and his expedition vanished. Fawcett's fate--and the clues he left behind--became an obsession for hundreds who followed him. As Grann delved deeper into Fawcett's mystery, and the greater mystery of the Amazon, he found himself irresistibly drawn into the "green hell."--From publisher description.
