Jannes: No sure if it is a coincidence, but the two perhaps best ghost stories ever written are both by women, in a genre otherwise mostly dominated by men. Both are superb explorations of death, loss, fear, and all those other elementsthat make up the good supernatural tales.… (més)

The Woman in Black is the story of a haunted house set far out in the salt marshes of England. It’s well-written, and the descriptions of the marshes in both sun a d rain are vivid.
But I may be jaded and blasé from reading so many mystery/suspense/horror stories, but this doesn’t seem that scary or creative along plot lines. It was easy to see motives and events far ahead of time. ( )

I did not believe in ghosts.
What other explanation was there?

I know, I know. I need to make some kind of resolution not to read any Susan Hill in 2017, or not any of her sad attempts at ghost stories, at least. She just turns phrases so well, I keep thinking she must have a good story in her. (I feel this way every time I succumb to the temptation to try Stephen King again, too, as I think I mentioned in one of my other Hill reviews.)

This time she managed the rather amazing feat of going on for 164 pages and almost neglecting to even tell the ghost story. Truly, about 150 pages of this book is our pansy of a narrator ignoring all the warning signs around him and then getting the vapors about his repeated collisions with the supernatural without really bothering to get down to the business of finding out what's going on. While of course no one tells him anything. (There turns out to be a sympathetic explanation for that hated plot device, but by the time you get it the book is four pages from over.)

Shorter rant: Hill is good at short stories and should stop writing novella length ghost stories altogether. Pick a different author for your spooky story cravings. ( )

This edition of the book is lovely. It was a very atmospheric, and fun read. I enjoyed the combination of the frightening mansion with the inaccessibility of the road at high tide. It is a good, "traditional" British ghost story, in the best sense. With a non-traditional ending.

This book gets the Pet Lover's Seal of Approval!

A very enjoyable book for me, well suited to my tastes. A pithy British ghost story with a lovely haunted house and a malevolent apparition. The isolation of Eel Marsh House was in and of itself very shudder inspiring and the "every mother's nightmare come true" theme was disturbing.

Side note: I myself have a dog named Spider, so when the fictional Spider appeared in the story I thought, "Oh, no, now there is a dog to worry about, too."

This is a quick read, perfect for December's foggy freeze and I was surprised and delighted by the little illustrations in the book. ( )

An extraordinary and powerful ghost story which not only gripped me, but genuinely unnerved me whilst reading it. ( )

I love this style of writing... very detailed and descriptive. Although some of our students have said that they had a hard time getting through the first few chapters, I was immediately captivated.

But gradually I discovered for myself the truth of the axiom that a man cannot remain indefinitely in a state of active terror. Either the emotion will increase until, at the prompting of more and more dreadful events and apprehensions, he is so overcome by it that he runs away or goes mad; or he will become by slow degrees less agitated and more in possession of himself.
A man may be accused of cowardice for fleeing away from all manner of physical dangers but when things supernatural, insubstantial and inexplicable threaten not only his safety and well-being but his sanity, his innermost soul, then retreat is not a sign of weakness but the most prudent course.
