Really interesting book about the growth, development and changing times of Millers Point, once a set of bustling wharves with residential buildings too, tucked away behind Sydney Harbour Bridge, and managing to maintain its character, history and heritage while the city turns into a shiny, glass-fronted skyscraper metropolis. It is a hidden gem with old buildings such as the Lord Nelson, Sydney's oldest hotel. ( ) Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya

Since convict times the trade of Australia has flowed through Millers Point. When it was an exotic seaport village, whaling, sealing and sandalwood crews thronged the rowdy pubs. Its mansions housed merchant princes. Later, Millers Point was mostly peopled by wharfies and their families, scraping a living from "the Hungry Mile". Plague reached Sydney, and it was quarantined. The government has managed it and mismanaged it ever since. No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
