Yuu Watase, the immensely popular writer/artist of the shôjo(girls) fantasy smash Fushigi Yûgi: The Mysterious Play, has turned her creativity and wry sense of humour to the horror genre with her anime/manga hit Ceres: Celestial Legend. Aya thought she was a normal teenager until she discovered that she can transform into a vastly powerful "heavenly maiden" named Ceres...But Ceres is furious and out for revenge! Celebrities say all kinds of outrageous things, don't they? But when Shuro - one half of Japan's hottest pop duo, GeSang - says on national television that not only is he the descendant of a ten'nyocelestial maiden, but that his family also still has in its possession the ten'nyo'scelestial robe or hagoromo, Aya and the others spring into action! There's more waiting for them in Okinawa than sold-out concerts and sightseeing, though. Shuro's claims of celestial heritage may be more than just PR spin. Kei (the other half of GeSang) may feel more for his partner than friendship. And Kagami, still plotting away at his nefarious "C-Project", may be closer to achieving his goals than anyone thinks...… (més)

Volume 6, and the eponymous Shuro really sunk the series for me. I had planned to read all of it, but I'm so frustrated with the author now I'm not sure I'll finish rereading it in the near future. Following the established pattern of introducing a new character with hidden super powers in every volume, we're given Shuro, one half of the glam rock boy band "GeSang". Shuro was born female but since she demonstrated some innate ESP, her family worried she'd be hunted down if the Celestial Maiden fully manifested in her, as it did with Aya. In a frustrating case of nature vs. nurture, Shuro who has been living as a guy and gained idol status, is secretly in love with her duo partner Kei. There's a very painful scene where the author makes it clear in no uncertain terms that Shuro is NOT gay and resents having been raised male. Even more frustratingly, Shuro was on the verge of coming out to her fans as a "fraud" when Kei tragically dies. Since she's now free from stardom, Shuro goes back to living her former life as a guy without revealing her identity. I like the potential subtext that Shuro represents, but Watase safely backpedals out of any real political stance and makes sure to deny Shuro an actual Trans identity... ( )
