I like the idea of a Doctor Who + Deep Space Nine parody, and I love the Seventh Doctor, and this story does have a bunch of funny parts. The very Star Trek sound design in the first episode was great. All the same, this story didn't really work for me. (Throwing in a handful of mildly sexist jokes will never win me over, either.) I thought The One Doctor pulled off the self-parody much better. ( )

An enjoyable, fast-paced and over-the-top murder mystery. There is a murder at every turn and a large cast of suspects, many with motive, that will keep you guessing who is responsible till the Doctor sorts things out in the end. The story features Sylvester McCoy as the Doctor and Bonnie Langford as Mel. It has the feel of a classic McCoy episode with the Doctor thrust in the middle of a strange future world. The story starts off with the Doctor being mistaken for someone else and he runs with it. Woven through the story are playful references to other Science Fiction and other television shows, especially Star Trek. Two Star Trek examples include the name of the station, Dark Space 8 (a reference to the Deep Space 9 Star Trek series) and the Doctor calling the weapons phasers and is quickly corrected that they are lasers. The story was not what I expected, but kept my interest through out and kept me guessing till the end. ( )

This ought to be a disaster - Doctor Who trying to satirise popular entertainment usually fails dismally. But it largely works, partly due to the all-star cast - former Goodie Graeme Garden as the doomed but slightly comical professor, former Sheriff of Nottingham Nickolas Grace as the sinister Mr Loozley, and former interstellar vampire Patricia Quinn as an alien princess (so no type-casting there then). There is also an alien which can only crackle rather than talking.

And lots of piss-taking of other sf stories - the space station where the contest is taking place is called "Dark Space Eight", and the rather colourless station doctor thinks she is in Star Trek - while at the same time the Doctor is trying to solve a murder mystery - one of whose victims is this play's Irish character, Commentator WLogan, played by David Tughan (presumably the jazz musician).
