Historical Fiction (694) » 3 més No hi ha cap discussió a Converses sobre aquesta obra. An interesting little twist salvages this story from being predictable or forgettable. A real page turner. It was written in a poetical prose that gave it a lyrical quality. I had to keep reading faster and faster to find out what was going to happen. I was happy with how it ended. It was a depressing vision of life but some people live in that bleak world. It was mostly a story of the inner workings of the minds of three people and there was quite a bit of emphasis on sex and how it pervades the world. The story takes place in a harsh winter and correlates to the winter in the minds of the characters, but spring eventually comes. These people are far from perfect but they learn to try to be better. A very worthwhile read. What I liked most about this book is the writer's competency in beautiful language, mood, and description. I also enjoyed how it reminded me of the old Gothic novels I used to love--albeit with a twist. But the book was sometimes too twisted and weird for me, so at times I felt I was sinking into a morass and didn't want to dirty myself in his world any longer. I read about 1/3 of it and found it too depressing, so I am not finishing it. I have a long list of books I want to read so on to more enjoyable reading...
Don't be fooled by the prissy cover or that ironic title. Robert Goolrick's first novel, "A Reliable Wife," isn't just hot, it's in heat: a gothic tale of such smoldering desire it should be read in a cold shower. This is a bodice ripper of a hundred thousand pearly buttons, ripped off one at a time with agonizing restraint. It works only because Goolrick never cracks a smile, never lets on that he thinks all this overwrought sexual frustration is anything but the most serious incantation of longing and despair ever uttered in the dead of night. Through repetitive and rhythmically hypnotic prose, Goolrick drives home the characters' loneliness, sexual yearnings, self-loathing and fear. He infuses his novel with the inevitable notion that things will end badly for this damaged family. But he lets us discover for ourselves the breadth and magnitude of dysfunction and the deadly conspiracy in which Catherine and Ralph are, ironically, both complicit. Set in 1907 Wisconsin, Goolrick's fiction debut (after a memoir, The End of the World as We Know It) gets off to a slow, stylized start, but eventually generates some real suspense. When Catherine Land, who's survived a traumatic early life by using her wits and sexuality as weapons, happens on a newspaper ad from a well-to-do businessman in need of a "reliable wife," she invents a plan to benefit from his riches and his need. Her new husband, Ralph Truitt, discovers she's deceived him the moment she arrives in his remote hometown. Driven by a complex mix of emotions and simple animal attraction, he marries her anyway. After the wedding, Catherine helps Ralph search for his estranged son and, despite growing misgivings, begins to poison him with small doses of arsenic. Ralph sickens but doesn't die, and their story unfolds in ways neither they nor the reader expect. This darkly nuanced psychological tale builds to a strong and satisfying close. When a wealthy man first meets his mail-order bride in 1907, he realizes this statuesque beauty is anything but a "simple missionary's daughter." But he doesn't know of her devious plan to leave Wisconsin as a rich widow. Nor does she know of the furious demons he longs to unleash during the lonely months of snowbound isolation. ― Robert Goolrick, A Reliable Wife
Taking place in snowy Wisconsin, this work of historical fiction, involves a man placing an Add for a reliable wife. From that ad he gets Catherine although as time goes on, the businessman realizes this Catherine is not quite the sweet and reliable wife he expected.
The writing here is really intense. I could almost feel myself in Wisconsin with the wind and snow all around me. I really enjoyed the book which strongly reminded me of a movie called “Original sin” and that movie was based on another book called ”Waltz into darkness”.
This is a dark Gothic novel that is pretty long but well written and quite interesting. The strong point is the writing. This topic is not new so the book could’ve been mediocre but the quality of the writing really sets it apart and I enjoyed every moment of this dark little novel. Highly recommended. (
