( ![]() This was my first Loretta Chase novel, but it won't be my last. I have to agree with some of the less-than-stellar reviews that the plot is thin, but then aren't most Regency historicals? (I mean, it's pretty amazing how many ways historical authors have come up with to tell the same bored-duke/earl/whatever-needs-to-wed-to-save-family-fortune plot. I applaud them...seriously!) It was Ms. Chase's writing style and characterizations that made this an enjoyable story for me. But then I think it's characterization that is the central point of any story, whether it's a book, TV or movie...or even TV commercial. Once we care about the characters, we keep reading and watching, maybe even through plot lines that aren't that compelling. It's true too that these characters' motivations might seem weak to some (especially viewed through the prism of our time and western culture), but for me, part of the fun of reading historicals is seeing that snapshot into the past (albeit a romanticized version of the past). It's escapism. That's why I read fiction. One of my least favorite novels by LC. I missed the usual development of the relationship and witty conversations. The relationship developed quickly and the rest of the pages seemed to be filled by the mystery bit. But I might be too critical because I enjoyed most of her other novels so much. Heroine grows up in a harem, textually "only trained to say yes," marries the first guy she spends significant time with after escaping. Cue sexy "exotic" dancing in the bedroom and creepy, creepy consent issues that are never addressed. There are some things that I am invariably drawn to, some of them are utterly ridiculous, this book seemed to hit on all of them. A girl that had no sense of proper decorum. Childhood sweethearts (of a sort). A deep, familial connection. A hero that's a bit ... lost, but not an idiot, and certainly not mean, and not quick to anger. A hero that apologizes when he's wrong, which he often is. A heroine that is so intelligent, and knows herself, and knows what she wants, and does what she can to seize it. I really loved everything about this book. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya

"Spunky English girl overcomes impossible odds and outsmarts heathen villains. That's the headline when Zoe Lexham returns to England. After twelve years in the exotic east, she's shockingly adept in the sensual arts. She knows everything a young lady shouldn't and nothing she ought to know. She's a walking scandal, with no hope of a future-- unless someone can civilize her. Lucien de Grey, the Duke of Marchmont, is no knight in shining armor. He's cynical, easily bored, and dangerous to women. He charms, seduces, and leaves them-- with parting gifts of expensive jewelry to dry their tears. But good looks, combined with money and rank, makes him welcome everywhere. The most popular bachelor in the Beau Monde can easily save Zoe's risqué reputation-- if the wayward beauty doesn't lead him into temptation, and a passion that could ruin them both" -- from publisher's web site.
