A great read but I thought the ending wrapped things up too quickly (?). Almost contrived; like an outline of how things would unfold looked great on paper, but in in pulling it off didn't work just quite right. ( )

Excellent book, recommended by Sarah. Three separate sections, each told by a different narrator, set in some of Europe's most alluring cities (London, Paris and Venice), going back in time chronologically, which provide the necessary details to understand Stone's Fall. ( )

Complex story, told in three parts. Each part is told from the point of view of a different person and is set in a different time, progressively going backward in time. It's disconcerting. I sometimes had difficulty with the timeline but it did all come clear ultimately.

The story, though, is essentially about one thing: a financier and industrialist, John Stone, falls out of the window of his office to his death. The questions: how did he fall and why? Was it as simple as his tripping on a rug or is there more to it? The story is also about his wife, a woman of intrigue throughout the book.

The first part is by Matthew Braddock, a sometime newspaperman, and starts in Paris in 1953. Braddock fills us in on his past with one of the main characters, the wife of the dead man. And finally comes to a conclusion about the fall.

But we are only partway through. Part two is by a man named Cort, takes place in London in 1909. We are also treated to Cort's memories as part of this journey. His relationship to Stone becomes clear, and the picture in general becomes a little murkier.

Part three is by Stone himself and finally pulls it all together, but it is no simple story.

A different twist on a mystery, if it can be called that. Absorbing. Almost like three books in one. I would have liked to read a section by Stone's wife, or perhaps have had her introduce it and conclude it, given her connection to all three men. I wanted to know her better. ( )

I am hooked. Just hooked. It is not a compulsive read but it is very compelling. What happened to John Stone and who is he? We know his wife is nutz.... ( )

A strange story that moves at a stately pace (and actually goes backward), but the characters and setting were interesting enough to make it all work. ( )

“Stone’s Fall,” ... gives the reader the expected more-than-500 pages and also what is not expected at all: a female character who might have stepped out of Balzac, along with a view of the belle époque that is neither anachronistic nor censorious. .... In the last third, Pears finds himself somewhat in the situation of the clumsy home improver who, deciding to decorate his front room, finds he has painted himself into a corner.

Admirers of Iain Pears's "An Instance of the Fingerpost" have waited more than 10 years for another lengthy, serpentine thriller bearing the stamp of his erudition in matters historical, artistic and financial. "Stone's Fall" generously rewards their patience.

This sprawling, unconventional, occasionally dazzling novel ends with an unconvincing and unnecessary denouement which serves only to undermine the foundations of the elaborate edifice he has worked so painstakingly to create.

The assurance and invention with which this novel is written are alike remarkable. Pears manages his complicated structure with a confidence and dexterity possible only to a master of the craft of fiction. ... Better, more profound novels may be published this year, but I shall be surprised if there is one that offers more complete enjoyment.

The Church of St.-Germain des Prés, at the start of what was supposed to be spring, was a miserable place, made worse by the drabness of a city still in a state of shock, worse still by the little coffin in front of the altar which was my reason for being there, worse again by the aches and pains of my body as I kneeled.
