It also teaches about the big woods DuPont Public Library Ages 3-5 A wonderful introduction to the classic stories of Laura Ingalls, the My First Little House books are a charming addition to any library. In this particular story, Laura and Mary are enjoying the fun of summertime in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Friends come to visit, trees are climbed, and work is done. This picture book version is true to the original chapter book Little House in the Big Woods’ telling of summer time in the Big Woods. The illustrations are also modeled after the original art from the Little House series. For anyone who has read the Little House books and loved them, they will certainly love these books too! THis book will be very intersting to a 3rd grade girl. The story talks about a little girl, Laura and her pioneer family share a home in the wilderness of Wisconsin. SummerTime In The Big Woods By Laura Ingalls Wilder SummerTime In The Big Woods is about a little girl named Laura who lives with her family in a log house in Wisconsin. It is summertime in Wisconsin and Laura and her Sister Mary help their ma and pa with all of the chores in the house and both of the girls enjoy the fun that summer brings. As Laura and Mary help their ma and pa with the chores their pa comes home with a new surprise! I enjoyed reading the Laura Ingalls Wilder book. I had never read one of her books before. I think that Laura Ingalls Wilder breathes breath life into the story and makes the story interesting. She has a good way of describing what it was like to live in the days when people lived in log cabins and farmed for a living. In these days the children were part of the household production. Everyone had a chore and had to help the family get by. I think reading these series of books to children is a good way to introduce what it was like for the children that lived in that day and time. After reading the story to my second grade class I would go through the pictures again with the students. I would ask the student to observe the clothes the characters were wearing what the house looked like and appliances in the house. I would have them compare all the things in the pictures to things that we have in this day in time. After discussing the book with the second graders I would have them participate in some creative writing in their journals. I would pair students up in groups of two and have the students write their own story and pretend that they lived in the same day and time as the girls in the book. I would ask the students to describe the house they lived in and the things they had to do as chores. I would also have the students tell about an adventure that they experience in their stories.
