Enjoyed it heaps more than war of the worlds tl;dr: some guy goes to a strange world, starts a forest fire and beats primitive animals with an iron pipe. No time traveling happens. I've read this several times over the years, and come back to it now and then. Like all of Wells's famous tales, the "science fiction" is really just an excuse to create a space to explore his socio-political ideas. The Time machine works well for his purpose, and remains a favorite. For anyone who hasn't yet read this, and is wondering if they'd want to read it, just consider that some people like fiction written more than a century ago, and some people don't. If you like your science fiction with airbrushed covers showing people in tight-fitting space suits wielding futuristic weapons in heroic poses, you might prefer to pass this one by. If you're OK with fiction employing Nineteenth Century conventions, check it out. I chose to listen to the story this time because Derek Jacobi was reading. He didn't disappoint. Very early sci-fi from one of the writers credited with creating the genre. This is more of a short story/novella than a full book - only about 80 pages. The idea is good, and there are some interesting insights into the concept of time travel, but, sadly, it seems a little lacking by current standards. The "new world" seems very much to be limited to issues current in Wells' old world.
Without question The Time Machine... will take its place among the great stories of our language. Like all excellent works it has meanings within its meaning and no one who has read the story will forget the dramatic effect of the change of scene in the middle of the book, when the story alters its key, and the Time Traveller reveals the foundation of slime and horror on which the pretty life of his Arcadians is precariously and fearfully resting... The Arcadians had become as pretty as flowers in their pursuit of personal happiness. They had dwindled and would be devoured because of that. Their happiness itself was haunted. Here Wells’s images of horror are curious. The slimy, the viscous, the foetal reappear; one sees the sticky, shapeless messes of pond life, preposterous in instinct and frighteningly without mind. One would like to hear a psychologist on these shapes which recall certain surrealist paintings; but perhaps the biologist fishing among the algas, and not the unconscious, is responsible for them. Love how it shifts from a seemingly utopian world to a dystopian one through a process of gradual attainment of knowledge. (
