The book started very slowly, and much of the book revolved around Anna guessing who was behind the various crimes or her personal loss of her husband, killed by a NYC taxicab. There is a murder, with the dead body being dressed as an old time sailor and left in a wreck on the bottom of Lake Superior, and the disappearance of his supposed lover. Mix in some mischief by her fellow park rangers, who are suspects at various points, but guilty of transgressions other than murder. The ending was a surprise, and Barr's gift is her descriptive prose in the state parks, involving flora and fauna. ( )

Synopsis: 'Anna Pigeon is posted to an island in Lake Superior, where her interest in wildlife is fully engaged by the local population of humans. Two scuba-diving tourists exploring an old, submerged wreck discover a recent addition: the body of Denny Castle, who ran a commercial diving concession in the park. This makes Anna uneasy about the mysterious disappearance of Donna Butkus, wife of fellow ranger Scotty Butkus. Hawk Bradshaw, who worked with Denny, suggests that there was a link between Denny and Donna, but Hawk is less revealing about the nature of the relationship he and his twin sister had with the dead man and the impact Denny's recent marriage (to yet another woman) had on it. The Bradshaws aren't the only reticent ones here; indeed, Barr's characters hide enough unsavory secrets to keep a soap opera humming for months. Despite the wealth of personal intrigue, FBI agent Frederic Stanton looks for a drug connection to the murder: ``I'm all for drugs . . . Takes the guesswork out of law enforcement.'' '
Review: There are plots and subplots, but they all come together to put Anna in the hospital, yet again. This is a chilling story in more ways than one. Drowning while scuba diving is scary, as is the thought of seeing drowned sailors from a forgotten era. ( )

Really wanted to like this book because it is set on Lake Superior where I have been. Anna is again headstrong in doing things her way putting people in more danger because she won’t wait for backup. Stationed on shore she makes friends usually by drinking with people who become prime suspects. Uses lots of red herrings. Although knows she should not dive alone she does it anyway. Wasted too much time on still recalling previous spouse although there was some comrade with a widow from a scuba diving shipwreck. Nice reminders of plants and trees from our Up North trips.

My favorite Anna Pigeon novel so far. This is the 2nd in the series and the third book of Nevada Barr's that I have read.

I found it interesting because I have never been to Lake Superior. Apparently, there is a National Park on an island and you can visit and go boating and diving and camping and fishing. Sounds like fun - I'm in! Well, except for diving. I know nothing of that so that was also a good point about the book - there were old shipwrecks buried in the lake.

Easy to read, plot moved forward quickly. A fun read for a lunch hour. On to the next one. ( )

Second in the Anna Pigeon series.

Having grown up on Lake Superior, I was particularly interested in this one. I have not visited Isle Royale, however, much as I've wanted to. This book gives me even more of an interest in getting there. One of the perks of reading this series is how they introduce us to national parks in an intimate way.

Anna has moved from the desert to the cold of Lake Superior, from dry to very wet and hot to quite cold. It's an adjustment. She can hardly comprehend the luscious growth all around her.

Anna goes through diving classes as part of her new job and is determined to be competent enough to make a deep dive when an extra body is discovered on the sunken Kamloops, making six where there were five - from 1927. She joins fellow rangers to investigate and bring the body to the surface.

The dead body belongs to another ranger. He has no dive equipment on, so why is he there? What happened?

In discovering the answers to these questions, Anna is suspicious of several workers on the island for different reasons. However, as it is federal land, the FBI is called in and she has to work with the agent, whom she calls Frederick the Fed. Bumbling and awkward, Frederick does not fool Anna. She soon picks up on his technique. The two make the best of the situation, and as they get close to the truth Anna finds her own life threatened, in true mystery-thriller style.

Well plotted, with interesting characters and the continuing growth of Anna, this character-driven series keeps my interest. ( )
