This was the second book by Picoult that I've read. And as with the first one, I was totally disappointed. I had no connection with any of the characters, even as a mother having gone through post-partum depression. I felt no compassion towards them, and couldn't wait to finish the book.

I have a sneaking suspicion, based on the two that I've read, that Picoult just doesn't bring her books to a satisfying ending. They both just suddenly ended, making for sloppy and, quite frankly, lazy resolution.

I was totally unimpressed. ( )

Paige had a mother who disappeared when Paige was 5, and this haunts her for years to come. After an abortion at 18, she runs away to Cambridge, Mass. where she meets a medical student. After marriage, medical school, etc., Paige has to come to terms with her mother's disappearance in any way she can. This book dragged in places, and at times I wanted to string up both main characters. Paige had too many secrets and was too immature many times, and Nicholas was a real jerk a lot of the time. I didn't particularly care for the ending. An epilogue chapter would have been nice. Still, Picoult deals with some difficult issues like she does in many of her books. This one just didn't click with me like some of the others have. ( )

Sentimentality at its worst. ( )

This was not a typical Jodi Picoult book with a court case. It was good, but not something I would have picked up were it not for Picoult's name. I did not particularly like any of the characters, esp bc of their selfishness. However, the writing style grabbed me as always. ( )

Title truly captures the theme of this book on multiple levels. From the beginning I thought this book would be a truly satisfying read. Paige's Dad was entertaining with his inventions but really only half of a father with his thinking of the past. Kept hoping for Paige to grow and learn from the past but she just got irritating. Nice of her to draw people that made them feel better but her overall behaviors at the hospital were unrealistic. Nicholas was impressive in his growth from being all about career advancement to realizing he could be a good father also. However by the end I lost respect for him with his unforgiving attitude. Both needed to grow up and by the end the reader realizes they have a long way to go. Accepted Paige running away to find her mother and deal with the past but she really needed to stay in touch with her own family (father and husband) ( )
