I thoroughly enjoyed this introduction to Agatha Raisin. She's smart, curmudgeonly, driven, plain and doesn't suffer fools at all well. I found Beaton's writing style unaffected and unpretentious. Will definitely read more in the series. ( )

I've loved Hamish McBeth forever so it was a pleasant surprise to find that MC Beaton had written another series with an equally entertaining protagonist. Agatha Raisin is gruff and just doesn't seem to care about some of the words coming from her mouth--but she's getting there ☺️ ( )

Cozy in the Cotswalds
Review of the Blackstone Audio Inc. audiobook edition (November 2012) of the original St. Martin's Press hardcover (1992)

Photograph of Agatha Raisin actress Ashley Jensen with author M.C. Beaton (penname of Marion Chesney) sourced from https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/3257137/mc-beaton-agatha-raisin-as...

As the lockdown seems to be gradually phasing out here in Ontario, Canada (writing this in late May 2021), I have almost come to the end of my deep dive into M.C. Beaton's Hamish Macbeth cozy mystery series (34 books) set in the Scottish Highlands. There was an extra level of comfort in the past year in letting myself step into a world where problems have an explanation and a solution. Even with the pandemic possibly ending, there are still debates about its possible origins in a Wuhan lab and about the efficacy or dangers of various vaccines. Seeing that M.C. Beaton had another cozy series in the Agatha Raisin mysteries (32 books), I have them in mind as a contingency plan for any possible continued stay-at-home orders.

Agatha Raisin is not as likeable a character as the not-ambitious village constable of Lochduch. She is a retired (50ish) Public Relations Executive who sold out her PR firm and has retired to the Cotswalds in England. In the fictional village of Carsely she tries to make friends and seek a possible husband by joining in various small town activities such as competitions, bake sales & church events. A lot of the humour is due to Agatha's lack of a social filter in much of her speech. There are a lot of fun sidekicks along the way as well.

I actually watched the early episodes of the TV series first, in which actress Ashley Jensen makes for a more likeable Agatha Raisin. This is helped by Jensen's Scottish heritage which gives a hint of the Macbeth series, although the character of Raisin is not Scottish in the books. Marion Chesney herself was very pleased with the TV adaptation, which although it is not 100% faithful to the books (several characters are changed, although most names remain the same) was a big improvement over the unfaithful Hamish Macbeth TV series.

In any case, it is good to have backup plan of cozies to get through a lockdown or a winter or whatever you need to help your mood during trying times. As an added bonus, most (28 of 32) of the Agatha Raisin audiobooks are free on Audible Plus (only about half of the Macbeth series was free). Book 32 Down the Hatch is yet to be released, expected in October 2021.

Trivia and Links
The Quiche of Death was adapted as the pilot episode for the currently ongoing Agatha Raisin TV series (2016-) for which you can see the trailer here. ( )

Quick and fun read I found out about this book from the Daily Deal email I get from Audible. I read the blurb, saw the star rating was pretty good, and dropped my $2.95.

I was pretty quickly engaged and found the various characters inhabiting the small village in the Cotswolds great fun to get to know. I laughed out loud several times and thought the pacing was very well done.

Who the murderer was isn't tough to figure out - and the author doesn't try to hide it very hard - but trying to figure out how it was done was the point of the case.

I can certainly see how the series could become addictive. The humor and the personalities of the residents alone make me want to read the next one right away.

The only thing that really pulled me out of the story is the way the POV style changed. For probably the first half of the book, we're getting Agatha's POV in a third person but that eventually changes to more of an omnipotent POV. First it's just Agatha, then it was Agatha and whomever was in the scene with her, and toward the end, characters not in a scene with her were featured. I found it distracting but it may not be something that other folks even recognize.

All in all, it was a fun read and I'm likely to eventually read the next in the series. And try to find the TV movie that was made based on The Quiche of Death.

its very difficult for me to come across a modern cozy whodunit that i sincerely enjoy...this one comes close :) i feel like that the puzzle part of the mystery needs a little more work (perhaps it will improve in the later books in the series), but i love the character of Agatha Raisin. i find her a refreshingly fun turn for an amateur sleuth and more endearing than Jessica Fletcher (sorry to her fans!).

of course i'm also biased...i used to live in the UK midlands, and the village of Carsley, the Cotswolds, and the rest of the location just stirred nostalgia in me :) ( )

Mrs. Agatha Raisin sat behind her newly cleared desk in her office in South Molton Street in London's Mayfair. From the outer office came the hum of voices and the clink of glasses as the staff prepared to say farewell to her.
