I liked this sequel way more than I thought I was going to. 2001 is such a staple of pop culture and most people have at least heard of the movie but I've never heard anyone talk about the sequels to the book. For me, the first book was slightly better. I liked the body of the story of the first book a bit more but I liked the last few chapters of this book and the ending more than I liked the ending of the last book.I also liked that in this book the cast of characters was bigger. Don't get me wrong, I loved the characters of the first book, but I loved the way the many people who were in this book interacted.
I think the ending of the first book is known for being a little confusing and hard to understand what was going on, even in the movie, I did find that I could follow the plot of this book more easily. I thought the plot of this book was very good, much better than what I expected. I went into this book thinking that I would read this book but not read the last to book in the series but this book may have made me change my mind, which I see as being a good thing. I thought this book connected nicely to the first book with trying to explain some of the more confusing parts of the last book . There were some weird moments in this book, though. In the first couple of chapters, the book introduced another AI just like HAL 9000 called SAL 9000. I thought this other AI would play a bigger role but it never showed back up. Some plot things like that tripped me up a bit but overall I really enjoyed it. A was pleasantly surprised by this sequel.
In other news, this is the book that completes my 2016 reading challenge! This is my first year doing the challenge and I really liked doing it. I was a good way to try to get myself motivated to incorporate more time for reading into my life even when I am busy with other things like school. I definitely want to participate in more reading challenges in the coming years because this was very fun. I am excited to see how many more books I can read in 2016 ( )

REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS
Summary:
9 years after Discovery’s mission to Jupiter, a joint US-Soviet expedition sets sail for the mysteries left behind by HAL and Dave Bowman. Their mission to rendezvous with the Discovery and search the memory banks to determine what happened out there. Though while they are searching something comes looking for them and the people of Earth. The Monoliths return. The future...the past...humankind...and others. New life. Old life. The future.

Why this book:
As a primer, along with 2001, for reading the next two books in the series.
_________________________________________
Cover Art:
Reminiscent of 2001.

Least Favorite Character:
Dr. Chandra is nuts. The fear that he will side with his creation is palpable.

Favorite Scene:
Ground Control to Major Tom: The horror of what happened to Professor Chang on Europa. At least the others died. He was left alone. With no hope. A million miles from the nearest humans and hundreds of millions of miles from home.

Graveyard watch with HAL on the reborn Discovery would be creepy as hell.

Hmm Moments:
Is the subtext between Haywood and Orlova intentional? And with her husband as part of the flight crew. If there was subtext it was never touched on again. Heywood Floyd's mentioning in a message to his wife whether she was wondering how he's getting along with Orlova just seems odd, in light of that aforementioned subtext. Of course, maybe that’s one of the things that the wife picked up on and that’s why she left him while he was across the Solar System.

Wondering if Irina the last-minute addition to the crew, replacement dietitian, is actually a KGB agent?

Last Page Sound:
It's a satisfying read.

Questions I’m Left With:
Uncertain at the purpose of having Bowman's first girlfriend lie to him when he came back to her as a ghostly alien presence or whatever the hell he is.

There's nothing terribly wrong with the novel, but nothing terribly right about it either. Having spent the 1970s working on the three books from what was then the biggest book deal in science fiction history, Clarke came back to 2001 partly because he was interested to follow the story, but also I'm sure partly because he realised he could make a lot of money from it. There are some good bits that are not in the film - the relationships between the astronauts, and Floyd's marriage, are all given a lot more detail, the tragic story of the Chinese expedition is a well-judged interlude, and we actually get to see the alien life of the Jupiter system. But it's also clearly written not to end the story but to continue it. I rushed out and bought this when it came out, but did not do the same for the later books in the series, and I don't think I was alone in reacting that way. I love almost all of Clarke's work, partly for teenage nostalgia and partly for genuine sensawunda, but this is not at the top of my list. ( )

MEMO TO: Sr. Jorge Luiz Calife of Rio de Janeiro RE: Advisability of sequel to ''2001: A Space Odyssey.'' According to a note at the end of Arthur C. Clarke's new novel, you are partly responsible for persuading the author that a sequel to ''2001'' would be a good idea, long after Mr. Clarke had concluded that such a sequel would be ''clearly impossible.'' I don't know exactly what you said to him in your letter, Sr. Calife, but I wish you hadn't.

Clarke deftly blends discovery, philosophy and a newly acquired sense of play that manifests itself in references to films like Alien and Star Wars, and snippets from recent headlines. If, by the end, he leaves readers as bewildered as his astronauts, they can at least claim to have been better entertained.
