I would use this book because it is relatable for students, the character is about the same age as many of the 3rd grade student body. I also really like this book because it is mostly story, with a lot of great featured facts in the book also. I would use this book as a read-aloud because it has so much detail that the students can ask questions about the animals they are looking at. ( )

This book, Adventures of Riley: Mission to Madagascar by Amanda Lumry and Laura Hurwitz is full of real pictures that make you feel as if you are actually visiting Madagascar with Riley. The book is a fictional book about a boy’s trip to Madagascar. This is one of a series of book on adventures Riley takes.
The book starts with Riley taking about his trip he is about to take to Madagascar and his search for a rare lemur called the aye-aye. There is a film crew with Riley and his family to try and catch the aye-aye on film. Throughout the book they visit several areas of Madagascar and learn about many different animals. The book does a wonderful job depicting the animals and adds real live pictures to help show what the animals really look like. There are also boxes off to the side of several pages with interesting information about things on the page from different scientists. These boxes give the name of the scientist and where he works. The book also works in a life lesson about how it is ok to be scared. Near the end of the book they find the aye-aye and get it on tape. After that Riley returns home to tell all his classmates about his exciting adventure.
The cartoon drawings in the book give it more of a younger feel but the real pictures placed throughout help give it a middle school feel. I think this book could be used in both elementary school and middle school. I think it would make for a good science lesson on different animals throughout the world or in a history class on the different places of Africa. As far as I can tell this seems to be a very accurate book on Madagascar. Information on several of the scientists mentioned in the book can be found on the web. Overall I love the realistic feel the book brings to its readers. ( )
