A selection of deliciously spooky short stories from the Japanese master of suspense, the acclaimed author of RING. The first story in the collection has been filmed as DARK WATER. Suzuki demonstrates the power of his psychological insight into the mechanics of fear in this highly atmospheric collection of stories unified by the theme of water. Following her divorce, Yoshimi Matsubara lives with her five-year-old daughter Ikuko in a depressing and damp apartment block on reclaimed land in Tokyo Bay. But when a child's red bag keeps turning up in unexpected places, Yoshino's sanity seems to be threatened, and she soon begins to fear that her daughter's life is at risk. Kensuke Suehiro jumps at the chance to visit a restricted island in Tokyo Bay, about which he once heard a rather strange story. But when he arrives, he finds far more than he bargained for. Fisherman Hiroyuki is embittered and unhappy in his marriage. But getting rid of his wife turns out to be anything but easy, especially when his own boat seems to be against him. Family man Sugiyama finds himself trapped in an underwater cave. Can he find a way to communicate with his beloved son one last time? Just four examples from this beautifully crafted collection of stories filled with suspense, tension and drama. A perfect introduction to one of Japan's top literary stars.…

Slightly eerie tales, all with the theme of water. Not wholly interesting or successful, although I did enjoy the title story, 'Watercolours' for its inventivenes. Would have enjoyed these a whole lot more as a young adult. ( )

[b:Dark Water|26759|Dark Water|Koji Suzuki|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1386921123s/26759.jpg|27439] is a collection of short stories all connected through the characters' interactions with water and death. The way Suzuki incorporated paranormal elements into these connections was very interesting and was what kept me reading. However, I was thinking this would be more of a horror book than it really was. The majority of the tales reminded me more of [a:Karen Russell|26417|Karen Russell|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1295563225p2/26417.jpg]'s short stories, which are general fiction that utilizes some paranormal elements. So, if you're looking for a scary or creepy read, I would suggest you look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a collection of interesting stories then this is a solid read. ( )

I think Koji Suzuki is an amazing author. After seeing his movies on the screen they are nothing compared to his books. I love his style of writing, his vision and take on the horror genre. This is a great read and quick and one to keep the lights on just in case that shadow in the corner turns into something else since your imgination is going to be running around crazy. ( )

This collection of short stories from the author of 'The Ring' series begins with the tale that inspired the movie 'Honogurai mizu no soko kara' and the American remake 'Dark Water'.

For fans of the movies, it's interesting to see how the movies extend and, to a certain extent, cap off the original story. I found the original fiction a little lacking when compared with the development of the more complete movie tale.

As with all of Suzuki's fiction, the stories start slowly and build gradually, rewarding the patient reader, but some will definitely be disappointed by a puzzling lack of horror and supernatural elements. It is there, but not in the quantity you might expect from this author.

Overrall, a little bit hit-and-miss, but certainly worth a read. ( )
