"This facsimile edition restores, for the first time, the selection and arrangement of the poems as Sylvia Plath left them at the point of her death. In addition to the facsimile pages of Sylvia Plath's manuscript, this edition also includes in facsimile the complete working drafts of the title poem, "Ariel," in order to offer a sense of Plath's creative process, as well as notes the author made for the BBC about some of the manuscript's poems." "In her foreword to this volume, Frieda Hughes, Sylvia Plath's daughter, explains the reasons for the differences between the previously published edition of Ariel as edited by her father, Ted Hughes, and her mother's original version published here. With this publication, Sylvia Plath's legacy and vision will be reevaluated in the light of her original working draft."--BOOK JACKET.… (més)

I had read a few of Plath's poems many years ago but don't remember ever sitting down and reading a whole collection, perhaps because by and large, poetry collections (of which I've struggled through many) are kind of terrible to sit down and read. Ariel followed this trend for me. Here and there I found a poem or a line or an image I liked, but I found myself glazing over plenty too, and generally I just don't think I'm the right audience for Plath, if I'm the right audience for poetry at all. My copy of the originally published version of Ariel has been a dear companion to me for many years, but this was my first time reading the edition put together as Sylvia intended it. I read the facsimiles of her original manuscript and it was thrilling to see it *exactly* as she'd put it together. She's my very favourite writer and one of the biggest influences on my own poetry, so it was, as always, an intense and affecting experience to read her. I hadn't written anything in a week before reading this, but I immediately wrote two poems of my own afterwards. It was also a very rough day for me emotionally, and reading such dark poems made me feel a little less alone. ( )

ThereÛªs a stake in your fat black heart
And the villagers never liked you.
They are dancing and stamping on you.
They always knew it was you.
Daddy, daddy, you bastard, I‰Ûªm through.

That stanza of "Daddy" alone is worth the price of admission. ( )

Sylvia Plath is about the most complex poet that I read. I hadn't actually ever read "Ariel" before. I'm glad I chose this edition because it had the poems written in more than once, and I found out that the second or third time I read them I seemed to understand them. ( )

I found three poems in Ariel that are worthy of comment here. The following is an article I wrote on the publication of this restored edition.
