It's been a while, but when I first read this years ago I loved it. ( )

Loved, loved, loved. But sooooo hated for it to end. And nary a cliché in sight. ( )

A darling little story of young love and sisterhood. I listened to the BBC Radio production and it was a great little 2 hour adventure with Cassandra. ( )

I enjoyed this every bit as much as I expected. A blend of gothic whimsy and emotionally honest psychological realism... sort of like Gormenghast meets Judy Blume. As in Gormenghast, the castle is a main character. (And Cassandra and Fuchsia should start a book club or something.)

On the first read, certain things about the ending were either slightly too pat or not pat enough, but I still found it satisfying.

And why is the UK in the thirties so compelling to silly romantic Americans such as myself? I suspect it's because if we stepped through a time portal, we feel we might be equally likely to run into Peter Wimsey or Bilbo Baggins.

Minor note: why are Modern Women with blunt haircuts and trousers and double-barreled surnames always the villains in these sorts of novels? (The various bohemian women friends in Dorothy Sayers excepted.) Why does the vegetarian career woman never triumph? ( )

3.5 stars

I loved the first half of the story, describing the ruined castle the family lives in, their poverty, the eccentricities of a couple of main characters; and, especially, the funny asides here and there from the narrator, 17-year-old Cassandra.

The second half is ultimately all about unrequited love. Wealth is introduced. A violent, moody, man is never called out for his failings, because he's a "genius." Tragic, romantic "twists" to the story are detailed.

The way everything ends is honestly just ridiculous, and I had a hard time rating this book because of my very mixed feelings about it...

Note: There is some mild profanity. ( )

This book was such a wonderful, enchanting and unpredictable read that by the end of it I felt like I almost was Cassandra, since her confessions, recordings and thoughts in her journals gave me a thorough insight into her. I also loved how the sections of the book were arranged in differently priced notebooks, which really demonstrated the progression of the story

It feels, reading it now, as if this is the story that every romantic comedy Hollywood has ever made has been trying to tell. And when we come towards the end of the book and a marriage proposal and happily-ever-after storyline seems to be in the offing, I was worried we were going to stray into that territory. But Smith is too good a writer, Cassandra too interesting a person to settle for this.
