Business. Self-Improvement. Nonfiction. HTML:

Mindset is one of those rare audiobooks that can help you make positive changes in your life and at the same time see the world in a new way.A leading expert in motivation and personality psychology, Carol Dweck has discovered in more than twenty years of research that our mindset is not a minor personality quirk: it creates our whole mental world. It explains how we become optimistic or pessimistic. It shapes our goals, our attitude toward work and relationships, and how we raise our kids, ultimately predicting whether or not we will fulfill our potential. Dweck has found that everyone has one of two basic mindsets. If you have the fixed mindset, you believe that your talents and abilities are set in stoneâ??either you have them or you donâ??t. You must prove yourself over and over, trying to look smart and talented at all costs. This is the path of stagnation. If you have a growth mindset, however, you know that talents can be developed and that great abilities are built over time. This is the path of opportunityâ??and success.Dweck demonstrates that mindset unfolds in childhood and adulthood and drives every aspect of our lives, from work to sports, from relationships to parenting. She reveals how creative geniuses in all fieldsâ??music, literature, science, sports, businessâ??apply the growth mindset to achieve results. Perhaps even more important, she shows us how we can change our mindset at any stage of life to achieve true success and fulfillment. She looks across a broad range of applications and helps parents, teachers, coaches, and executives see how they can promote the growth mindset. Highly engaging and very practical, Mindset breaks new ground as it leads you to change how you feel about yourself and yo… (més)

Outliers: The Story of Success de Malcolm Gladwell (peter_vandenbrande)

Why Don't Students Like School: A Cognitive Scientist Answers Questions About How the Mind Works and What It Means for the Classroom de Daniel T. Willingham (bluenotebookonline)
bluenotebookonline: Very readable book on cognitive science as it applies to teaching and learning. One chapter features the growth mindset, and the others are fabulous as well.

How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character de Paul Tough (bluenotebookonline)
bluenotebookonline: Tough goes broad on a range of non-cognitive factors that influence the likelihood that students will be successful (grit, perseverance, curiosity, etc.); Dweck goes deep on one factor (having a growth mindset rather than a fixed mindset). Both are highly readable (though FWIW, I found Dweck repetitive and preferred Tough's book).… (més)

Thanks for the Feedback: The Science and Art of Receiving Feedback Well (Even When It Is Off Base, Unfair, Poorly Delivered, And, Frankly, You're Not in the Mood) de Douglas Stone (peter_vandenbrande)

was handed out at the principal's meeting. It was very repetitive, but a good quick read. ( )

Most of the book was common sense, but the examples of famous people of a fixed mindset and ones of a growth mindset were interesting. ( )

Very important work. You may well recognize yourself and people you care about in this book, and find yourself seeing self and others from a new perspective.

I think this book is particularly important for anyone parenting or working with children, as this book provides practical advice on how to help children develop a "growth mindset", which equips children to become resilient and self-motivated.

I highly recommend.

Still relevant today as much as it was when it was first published in 2006. A must-read for teachers, parents, and any adult willing to try to reframe the way they have thought about the outcomes they can control. Our beliefs about our capacities are wired from our cultural and societal upbringings but may need a new pathway of thinking in order for us to fully realize the truth of Dr. Dweck's research. A game-changer in today's modern approach to teaching and parenting our children to approach failure with an opportunity for growth. ( )

A realistic analysis of life's options for the average person, with very practical and learnable skills. The main accent is on developing a growth-mindset, but without blinding oneself to one's own limitations. Not everyone needs to be a multi-billionaire, but everyone can live a meaningful life without beating oneself up for not being ultra-successful in worldly terms. ( )
