Deep in the Pacific Northwest lies the Olympic National Forest--nearly one million acres of impenetrable darkness and impossible beauty. Even in this modern age, much of it remains undiscovered and uncharted. From the heart of this old forest, a six-year-old girl appears. Speechless and alone, she can give no clue as to her identity, no hint of her past. Until recently, Dr. Julia Cates was one of the preeminent child psychiatrists in the country, but a scandal shattered her confidence, ruined her career, and made her a media target. When she gets a desperate call from her estranged sister, Ellie, a police chief in their small western Washington hometown, she jumps at the chance to escape. In Rain Valley, nothing much ever happens--until a girl emerges from the deep woods and walks into town. She is a victim unlike any Julia has ever seen: a child locked in a world of unimaginable fear and isolation. When word spreads of the "wild child" and the infamous doctor who is treating her, the media descend on Julia and once again her competence is challenged. State and federal authorities want to lock the girl away in an institution until an identification can be made. But to Julia, who has come to doubt her own ability, nothing is more important than saving the girl she now calls Alice. To heal this child, Julia will have to understand that she cannot work alone and must look to others--the people in the town she left long ago, the sister she barely knows, and Dr. Max Cerrasin, a handsome, private man with secrets of his own. Then a shocking revelation forces Julia to risk everything to discover the truth about Alice. The ordeal that follows will test the limits of Julia's faith, forgiveness, and love, as she struggles to ascertain where Alice ultimately belongs.… (més)

A young child, unable to speak, dirty and wild appears one day in a small town. The sheriff normally only has to worry about drunk drivers and domestic problems but is now faced with how to handle the case of the unknown child. Her sister (a renowned child psychologist, who has recently faced a crisis of her own) returns to her sisters town to help with the child. This little girl becomes the center of everyone's world. ( )

Ellie, is Rain Valley’s police chief, and along with two members of her team, Peanut and Cal, they rush into town because of a report about a strange happening in the town’s center. When they arrive, they find a small child in a tree cradling a wolf pup. How did the little girl climb so high up into the tree? Some sensationally say she flew up into the tree. Food is used to entice the hungry and malnourished little girl down to the ground. Ellie then captures her with a net and sedates her. I don’t like how they tricked the child.

The girl is taken to the hospital where the local doctor, Max, comes to examine her. He discovers that the child suffers from malnutrition, and she shows signs of being tied up in the past.

Ellie’s goal is to find the child’s family. Extensive research is conducted to find anything about the wild child as media attention wanes.

Julia, Ellie’s sister, is a renown child psychiatrist and works with the child over many months and gains her trust, and finally gets her to begin to speak even though the child still cannot tell Julia anything about her family.

As time goes on and no one claims the child now being called Alice. Julia becomes attached to the child and begins adoption procedures but encounters difficulties when the child’s biological father, George, suddenly appears. At least he claims to be her real father.

The dilemma... who should get the girl? Her biological father who the girl she doesn’t know or Julia who has poured her soul into Alice who has come to think of Julia as her mommy? ( )

Well written, but the plot was a little implausible to me. I went into this blind without reading the summary so I had no idea what I was getting into. Basically a small town sheriff from the outskirts of the Olympic National Forest discovers a small feral child holding a wolf pup. The girl hides, growls, bites, and doesn't know how to speak. Ellie is out of her depth so she calls her famous psychologist sister to come out and help work with this kid. They're trying to get her identified and find her family, because this kid has gone through so much trauma and needs all the help she can get. The sisters find themselves drawing closer to each other and find themselves head over heels over this mysterious wolf girl. Emotional, filled with small town gossip, budding relationships, family drama, and a quest for justice. ( )

"Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real." "Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit. "Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was truthful.  --The Velveteen Rabbit Margery Williams

This one is for my son, Tucker. It seems like only a few years ago I could hold you in my arms. Now we're touring colleges and talking about your future. I am so proud of the boy you were and the man you are becoming. Soon you will be leaving your dad and me to find your own way in the world. Know that whatever you do, wherever you go, we will always love you.
