One of John Updike's best novels. ( )

So firstly, this bares as little in common with its film adaptation as 'The Stepford Wives' soooo... not a lot. Unfortunately this isn't the boon you might think it is.

Set in the sixties and with certain feminist (or attempted feminist) undertones it does actually have a certain [b:The Stepford Wives|52350|The Stepford Wives|Ira Levin|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1403404262s/52350.jpg|1534281] vibe at times, mixed with the [b:The Master and Margarita|117833|The Master and Margarita|Mikhail Bulgakov|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1327867963s/117833.jpg|876183] perhaps. However its far inferior to either of those.

Its main problem is that nothing happens... i mean Nothing! There was a few moments of interest at about 4/5's despite the main characters seeming to completely change their personalities, but that faded fast.

The writing style is truly awful, it is both overly specific and yet still somehow incredibly vague. I have a pretty good ability to picture events from books but with this it was always a half-formed image.
The author uses the most ridiculous metaphors and combines them with nested sentences. You'll often have the start of the sentence the weathers been quite nice here lately i've been watching some of the tennis then a few extra sentences in the middle before getting back to the point :P .

But the main issue is simply that it feels really pointless. Half-formed characters with a half-formed narrative. To steal some shakespear 'full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing' but with only a very small amount of sound and fury ;) . ( )

Beautiful language, but the plot's a mess and doesn't really make sense. I understand why they changed it for the movie. ( )

Overloaded with American domestic detail; over-bearing busy-body prose that annoys from start to finish. Updike's unable to let up on informing you that he's got a handle on furnishings, gardening, energy technology, conservation and overwhelmingly on women and their motivations. It reaches a climax towards the end where there are pages of waffle extolling a piece of cello work by Brahms (or is it Bach?). Spare me!!
The characters are dull, wasting away in a dull town. The witches manage to struggle on with hobbies that could never satisfy, clay sculpture, amateur cello and writing gossip for their small town rag. Like the book, they cannot last and their witchcraft dispels them.
Daryl van Horne is not a devil, as some tend to portray him. He's a raving nut-case and swindler, in case you wish to know.
If you've got a short time to live, or maybe you simply value your time on Earth, you can pass this book by.

Tror jeg bare leste den første siden før jeg forstå at dette kom jeg dessverre ikke til å like. Føler jeg kommer til å sløse tid ved å lese denne boken, vil heller bare se filmen egentlig.

Mr. Updike takes ''sisterhood is powerful'' at its word and imagines it literally. What if sisterhood really is powerful? What will the sisters use their ''powers'' for? And what - given human nature, of which Mr. Updike takes not too bright a view - what then? Luckily these witches are only interested in the ''personal,'' rather than the ''political''; otherwise they might have done something unfrivolous, like inventing the hydrogen bomb.... ''The Witches of Eastwick'' is an excursion rather than a destination. Like its characters, it indulges in metamorphoses, reading at one moment like Kierkegaard, at the next like Swift's ''Modest Proposal,'' and at the next like Archie comics, with some John Keats thrown in. This quirkiness is part of its charm, for, despite everything, charming it is. As for the witches themselves, there's a strong suggestion that they are products of Eastwick's - read America's - own fantasy life.

"And oh yes," Jane Smart said in her hasty yet purposeful way; each s seemed the black tip of a just-extinguished match held in a playful hurt, as children do, against the skin. "Sukie said a man has bought the Lenox mansion."

For the last time...the exact blue of such a July day falls into my eyes. My lids lift, my corneas admit the light, my lenses focus it, my retinas and optic nerve report it to the brain. Tomorrow the Earth's poles will tilt a day more toward August and autumn, and a slightly different tincture of light and vapor will be distilled.
