This children's picture book tells the story of two friends: a boy and his best friend Peef, the multicolored teddy bear. The two friends adventure through a summer day running from dinosaurs to swimming through the coral reef before bed time. Then the boy started going to school and has trouble making friends and Peef helps comfort him and gives him good advice to be himself. Then he makes another friend and that friend makes the boy feel embarrassed that he loves playing with Peef. This hurts Peef but then the boy comes and apologizes and reminds the boy to just be himself and things are right again. This book teaches readers an important lesson about being true to who you they are and not let what others think change you. It also shows what true friendship looks like, having fun, sharing your thoughts and insecurities and then forgiving when one hurts the other. The illustrations are beautifully detailed watercolor paintings that evoke strong memories for adults and kids can connect with the fun adventures the two friends have. A teacher could use this book at the start of the school year to talk about fitting in and being who you are. She could have students talk write about a time they didn't fit in and felt like they needed to change something to fit in. They could discuss why it's important to forgive our friends when they hurt us as a way to talk about conflict resolution as well. ( )
