Medical. Self-Improvement. Sociology. Nonfiction. HTML:

A longtime trauma worker, Laura van Dernoot Lipsky offers a deep and empathetic survey of the often-unrecognized toll taken on those working to make the world a better place. We may feel tired, cynical, or numb or like we can never do enough. These, and other symptoms, affect us individually and collectively, sapping the energy and effectiveness we so desperately need if we are to benefit humankind, other living things, and the planet itself. In Trauma Stewardship, we are called to meet these challenges in an intentional wayâ??to keep from becoming overwhelmed by developing a quality of mindful presence. Joining the wisdom of ancient cultural traditions with modern psychological research, Lipsky offers a variety of simple and profound practices that will allow us to remake ourselvesâ??and ultimately the world… (més)

A lot of good thoughts and practices and this speaks to the reader in a kind way. In the beginning she talks about how many people deal with trauma Stewardship (EMTs, caregivers, doctors, teachers, firefighters, etc.) but most of the narrative is in the frame of reference of her past work as a social worker. Offers a look at the many ways the stress of dealing with trauma manifests itself: feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, diminished creativity, chronic exhaustion, cynicism, and more. This title presents a variety of simple practices that enable us to look carefully at our reactions and motivations and discover sources of energy and renewal.

I'm not quite done, but have really enjoyed this book. It's like an intervention to someone like me who does a lot of things and struggles with focus.

Not a lot of what I read is amazingly new, but the delivery and connecting of certain moments makes things a bit clearer.

I'd recommend this to anyone who works in any justice seeking field. My book group had a range of occupations: social workers, a psychiatrist, social justice organizers and students. We all identified with parts of the book and learned a little bit about ourselves.

i might end up being an evangelist for this book for anyone who advocates for anyone or anything on any level at all. it's not perfect, and if i'm being honest i really can't compare it to other books in this category (self-care, self-help, spirituality) because i don't read these kind of books. but it was accessible and not over the top for someone who doesn't want to read self-help, but wants some guidance on self-care and managing secondary/vicarious trauma. this is one that i feel like i'll need to go back to over and over.
