Based on a true event, in which a young revolutionary was murdered by his comrades, The Possessed provoked a storm of controversy for its harsh depiction of a ruthless band of Russian intellectuals, atheists, socialists, anarchists, and other radicals who attempt to incite the population of a small provincial town to revolt against the government. In contrast to Dostoevsky's savage portrait of these radicals and the violent ideas that have possessed them like demons, the author expresses great sympathy for workers and other ordinary people ill-served by those who presume to speak in their name.… (més)

    Petersburgo de Andrei Bely (kitzyl)
kitzyl: "The turbulent late years of the Russian empire produced not one but two novels about terrorist plots that abound in images of carnivalesque horror. Dostoevsky’s Demons (1873) and Andrei Bely’s Petersburg (1913, revised 1922 [!]) both dramatize the activities of radical terrorist groups. Members of terrorist cells engaged in secretly planned and spectacularly performed acts of violence, and both Dostoevsky and Bely employ theatrical imagery to represent the dual nature of terror, as a both private and public phenomenon. This theatricality ranges from Shakespearean allusions to acts of costuming and scripting to images of puppets and clowns." Issue 35 of Hypocrite Reader… (més)

A sometimes funny, sometimes dark satire of revolutionary figures in Russian history and the high society that were sucked in by them. Pyotr was the most fascinating character for me, able both to cajole with boundless energy his comrades with threats of a shadowy international socialist order, and also hoodwink the rich liberals of high society into accepting him into their fold. The structure was a bit chaotic, as often is the case with Dostoevsky's major novels, but there were the occasional highly entertaining set pieces involving multiple characters, and wonderful passages of psychological and philosophical insight, which are his trademark. That was a wild ride. It starts out quite boring like a soap opera but after about the quarter mark it gets into details of a conspiracy and gets really good.
One of the odd things is, its so realistic. The revolutionists all have a different idea of what they're rebelling against and the group is made up of the gullible, the stupid and the insane. The acts they perform are also quite underwhelming as they would be in real life.
Finally the head of the conspirators is a virtual Super-Villian. His ability to plan and manipulate is a real treat to see. However its the reveal of his ultimate goal and motivation which is the best part of the story. In the end the author gets a bit cowardly with a lot of problem characters conveniently dying.
Despite being far longer than need be especially the start, its character development is certainly worth the price of admission. ( )

The title refers to the infestation of foreign political and philosophical ideas that swept Russia in the second half of the 19th century. Idealism, rationalism, empiricism, materialism, utilitarianism, positivism, socialism, anarchism, nihilism and, Dostoevsky, taking as a starting point the political chaos around him at the time, builds an elaborate moral tale about which the people of a provincial town as they turn against each other because they are convinced of the infallibility of their ideas. Stepan Trofimovich, an affable thinker who does little to turn his liberal ideas into action, creates a monster in his student, Nikolai Vsevolodovich Stavrogin, who takes his spiritual father's teachings seriously, joining a circle of other nihilists who justify any excess violence because of your ideas. Stavrogin aims at systematic corruption of society and all its principles "so that, with the resulting destruction, he can raise the flag of rebellion". A frightening harbinger of Stalinist logic. The there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them. Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lat, and were choked. When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country. Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet to Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed. -Luke viii. 32-36
Strike me dead, the track has vanished,  Well, what now?  We've lost the way,  Demons have bewitched our horses,  Led us in the wilds astray...What a number?  Whither drift they?  What's the mournful dirge they sing?  Do they hail a witch's marriage or a goblin's burying? - A. Pushkin
