    Dressed to kill : a novel de Brian De Palma (jseger9000)
    jseger9000: Though the stories and characters are different, Dressed to Kill is essentially a remake of Psycho. Interesting to watch them back to back.

=========================================

Speaking of Hitchcock’s best movies, this one is my favourite. Guess why. Because, for once, Hitchcock had an excellent script at his disposal. It is complex, tightly written and marvellously twisted. It is nowhere near as shocking today as it must have been in 1960, and the final explanation sounds a little contrived, but that’s just a quibble. Hitchcock was lucky with his cast as well, and I mean Anthony Perkins. He is nothing short of spellbinding from his first appearance, charming yet slightly sinister, to the famous final smile which provides one of the most chilling conclusions in movie history. Of course, Hitchcock is an indispensable part of the movie’s greatness. The Shower Scene is justly famous, but it tends to obscure his far greater overall achievement. I have not seen another movie in which the Master of Suspense has succeeded better, first, to unify two essentially different stories, and second, to build up the tension steadily from the very beginning to the very end. It is one giant tension curve, very smooth and pretty much perfect. It makes for a most unnerving experience, never mind how many times you’ve seen it already. No wonder this movie stays fresh at the respectable age of 60. But the best proof for its greatness is not the staying power. It is the fact that it was copied – not remade; copied! – by Gus Van Sant in 1998 with Vince Vaughn (what an idea!) as Norman Bates. The copy is fantastically boring, unwatchable in fact. And the reason is not that it’s in colour, even though I think it was a brilliant idea to shot the original in black and white. Genius is not a copy-paste commodity. ( )

(Psycho, Usa 1960 b/n, 108') Alfred Hitchcock. ( )

A secretary runs off with stolen cash and ends up at an isolated motel.

Knowing what's going to happen ruins most of the suspense, but it's still awesome.
