I love this book! This book is about Helen the author. I know the children would enjoy this book because it's amazing. Helen writes about how difficult it was to grow up with a disability. She has something that is called "mirror writing." Helen would write everything backward, instead of writing from left to right, she writes from right to left. As Helen grew up, she was taught the proper way to write, but she gets frustrated. Soon enough, Helen became a teacher, but the most interesting part is she became a writing teacher. You can tell when Helen enjoyed writing because she would write everywhere she go. She would jot down ideas that came to her. It wasn't easy for Helen, but she pulled through. She was denied a few times, but she kept going and never gave up. Helen continued to revise and write books until she submitted the perfect book. Her book was accepted for publication. Helen was determined, and she overcame her disability by practicing writing every day. I understand what Helen been through because I struggle with a language disorder. Any type of disability children may have, this story is a great example. You have to do what you love and keep going, don't quit. I believe the theme is determination because Helen kept writing and writing, she never gave up. That's how she became a writing teacher and an author of children's books. ( )

This book is about an author, Helen Lester, who was a "mirror writer" as a child. So Helen was writing in a wrong direction; however, she was able to write from left to right, eventually. It is a very inspiring story about perseverance, hard work, believing in yourself, and dealing with not being like everyone else. Helen Lester also illustrated this book and it looks adorable. It was very difficult for her teachers to read her work. Helen worked very hard and eventually became a published author. She also introduces the idea of a Fizzle Box. Young writers can put all of their ideas into a Fizzle Box and come back to them whenever they please. Her story tells the tale of perseverance and hard work. I liked his story, but found it difficult to figure out what her learning disability was. ( )
