2021 movie #100. 1974. A man is beaten to death in his apartment and the lead suspects are a couple of demobilized soldiers. The motive? The victim was Jewish. Hate was the motive. The movie that type cast Robert Ryan as a villain.

=========================================

Hating is always the same, always senseless. One day it kills Irish Catholics, the next day Jews, the next day Protestants, the next day Quakers. It’s hard to stop. It can end up killing men who wear striped neckties. Or people from Tennessee.

This movie came highly recommended as a fine film noir, but I was rather disappointed with it. The script is very uneven and so is the acting. The movie plays with one big and unfortunately timeless issue, the nature and consequences of hate (homophobia in the novel, anti-Semitism here, the special form is irrelevant), but that’s all it does. It plays. It never probes. Robert Young has a fine speech on the subject towards the end, but it feels somewhat preachy and rather insufficient as an explanation in this particular case. Young does a good job as one of those intelligent, kind and compassionate cops you sometimes meet in the movies but never out of them. Robert Ryan is outstanding as he always was when he played vicious bigots, an anti-Semite here, a racist in Odds Against Tomorrow (1959) and the purest breed of villain in Billy Budd (1962). But he cannot make the script more dramatic than it is. I enjoyed greatly, as I always do, the alluring presence of Gloria Grahame, here not yet 24 years old, but she is given a small part of little importance. Some of the acting is merely decent (Mitchum), some is atrocious (Cooper), and some is superfluous (Kelly). It’s a weak script in the first place, not really film noir according to my (admittedly vague) definition. It’s a crime drama, a murder investigation told in a confusing way with multiple points of view and flashbacks, and crowned with an almost farcical ending. The cinematography has been much praised, but I found it much too bright and monotonous – like Dmytryk’s direction. The sensual element and the sinister ambience of film noir are likewise completely missing. The whole thing felt much longer than 86 minutes. No revisiting planned. ( )

(Crossfire, Usa 1947, b/n,85') Edward Dmytryk.
