Just finished this first volume. The book is short sweet and to the point. No filler to be found. It is well written and loose, which gives it a good flow. There are some truly horrific moments. If I would have read this book as a teenager I would have been terrified. Case in point. The strigoi looking through the letter opener. That was very well written. The story has been critiqued as reading too much like a screenplay. Well..that is ok. The characters are well developed move well with each other. The writers really bring EPH into his own and show his conflict and despair concerning his wife. I was hoping to see the evil NAZI from the series make an appearance and I am glad the hacker hippie was not part of it. Was a little disappointed with the brief intro of the elders. I am sure they will be brought to further life later. It would be nice to see more of them. She is too much of a distraction. Good read. Looking forward to the second book. ( ![]() This was good horror. It wasn't good horror that would keep me up at night or infest my thinking pattern, but it was a nice summer read (in April). That said, there were some POV problems which actually made me read some passages twice. I'm looking forward to starting the second book (THE FALL)...right now. I can certainly see why this will (hopefully) work very well as a TV show. Compelling plot, episodically written, dramatic, bantery dialogue, and archetypal characterizations. It's got all the hallmarks of a suspense novel with the added bonus of horror. But, as a book, it didn't work so well for me. Or, well, the first part worked really well, the middle act less well, and, like so many of the other reviews I've read, by the third part, I was over it. My major complaint is with the "main" character (I'm calling him the main character; I'm 99% sure he would be the main character). He's a brilliant epidemiologist with the CDC whose set up this amazing unit that's going to save (American) humanity from pandemic infections. And, as soon as he comes across a "virus" that, truly, can wipe out humanity, he, apparently, completely forgets that he's a brilliant doctor. I mean, he goes astonishingly fast from "we have to save these people" to "nope, just gonna kill 'em." I would have liked to see more science. Maybe that comes in the next books? This was, clearly, my sticking point. If you can get past that (and a few other plot holes I can only assume will be mended in the other books) it is a speedy, creepy, suspenseful read. The first part with the whole plane thing is really great. Really. An interesting take on the vampire mythos and one I look forward to reading more about, if not eagerly. The male characters are varied and interesting but it really underdevelops the femal characters. Interesting idea but ultimately unsatisfying for me.
I am torn about The Strain. I like it for all of its blood-sucking charms, but in order to do so, I’ve got to overlook some fairly major shortcomings in its mechanics. And I’ve got to do it all while somehow managing to avoid blaming Guillermo for anything. It's so creepy that when I told my wife and daughter about it *they* got creeped out just from my description. The Strain is a breakneck thrill ride chronicling only the first four days of the vampire plague that may destroy civilization. The cinematic quality really comes though, making the book feel more like a action blockbuster than a thought-provoking horror novel. The publisher is hyping the heck out of this book, and it will sell like a Dan Brown of the Undead. It has some dopey parts, but is also pretty entertaining and scary. This would be an excellent vacation read, although I would not recommend reading the first fifty pages on an airplane if you are a nervous flier. Save it for the beach soaking up the UV rays.
