Coyote Horizon begins a spinoff series set in Allen Steele’s Coyote/Hex universe. Steele says that it is written for his readers who demanded more stories to flesh out Coyote history. The novel has a discontinuous episodic structure that almost seems to be a group of short stories. It takes place sometime after the discovery of the stargate and the alien civilization on Hex. Coyote is faced with an overwhelming influx of impoverished immigrants from Earth and with its first diplomatic visitors from Hex. To complicate matters, some colonists have discovered local plants that enhance telepathic ability and make people more receptive to the spiritual beliefs of the aliens. I wish it were more pulled together, but if you are drawn to the Coyote universe, you will no doubt like Coyote Horizon. ( )

386 pages. I hate it when science fiction writers introduce religion into their works and make it the central focus. It seldom goes well. This is what happen in this trip to Coyote. The science fiction and world building elements that made the Coyote universe fun are given short schriff in favor of the story of a another messiah figure that claims he's not a messiah. ( )
