The rabbi's cat, after eating the family parrot, acquires the ability to speak, but the rabbi thinks the cat says nothing but lies and forbids it from talking to his daughter, for fear it will poison her mind. When the rabbi decides to teach the cat the Torah to put him on the right path, the cat argues that he isn't Jewish and must have a Bar-Mitavah before he can be considered as such. A very clever and amusing tale, with a cat that is irreverent and funny. The drawings are very good, done in an original and expressive cartoon style in which the cat looks different from one frame to the other. The original French version of this series is made up of 5 different volumes (as opposed to 2 omnibus editions in the English translation), and this is book 1 of 5. Definitely recommended. The preeminent work by one of France's most celebrated comic artists, this book tells the unique story of a rabbi, his daughter, and their talking cat - a philosopher brimming with scathing humor and surprising tenderness. Rich with the colors, textures, and flavors of Algeria's Jewish community, it brings a lost world vibrantly to life - a time and place where Jews and Arabs coexisted - and fills it with endearing, thoroughly human characters, and one truly unforgettable cat.
