Motivations for various actions of the characters just didn't seem to make sense. Honestly I was quite bewildered by this one; there seemed to be an entire lack of coherent clues through the whole thing. What drew me on was the occasional sudden nitid beauty of the Itchen meadows, even though the descriptions were often dropped in wholesale within passages of narrative. The denouement, when it comes, is rather uninspiring. Perhaps I'm just not bright enough for Mitchell and should stick to Christie, Marsh and Sayers! A family party are spending a holiday in Winchester. This varied group include Edris Tidson and his wife and Miss Carmody and her niece. Edris is hoping to spot a naiad ! who has been seen in the nearby River Itchen. Shortly afterwards two boys are found murdered nearby. Mrs Bradley and her niece and helper Laura, who happen to be in the area, begin to investigate this very strange case. It is in the character of Mrs Bradley that this and others in the series stand out. She is known by her friends as 'Mrs Croc',as she is somewhat saurian in looks. She frequently cackles and is descended from a witch.A great character in fact. Most of Gladys Mitchell's books are great fun and this one is no exception.
There can be not the slightest doubt that Gladys Mitchell belongs to the select few exceedingly good women writers of exceedingly good detective fiction. I adore Miss Mitchell....She is a born story-teller who uses the form as a peg to hang her delightful inventions on. A new book by Gladys Mitchell has always been a delight... Mrs. Bradley is as clever a creation as has ever been devised. It gives this reviewer at any rate a positive thrill of pleasure to encounter her again. A VINTAGE MURDER MYSTERY Rediscover Gladys Mitchell - one of the 'Big Three' female crime fiction writers alongside Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers. When former banana-grower Edris Tidson hears of the possible sighting of a water-naiad he insists that his wife, her aunt Prissie and Prissie's young ward Connie, travel with him to Winchester in search of the nymph. As tensions rise between Connie and Edris, Prissie invites the renowned psychoanalyst, and unrivalled detective, Mrs Bradley to join them and unofficially observe Edris and his growing obsession. Then two young boys are found drowned and speculation mounts that the naiad is luring them to her deaths. Can Mrs Bradley unravel the mysteries hidden within the river? Opinionated, unconventional, unafraid... If you like Poirot and Miss Marple, you'll love Mrs Bradley. No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
