( ) Book title and author: The Vision of the Anointed: Self-Congratulation as a Basis for Social Policy by Thomas Sowell reviewed 9-10-23 Why I picked this book up: I have been on a Sowell spree and continued with this one. Thoughts: This is another book based on logic, history, legal, economics, just society and relevant societal directions and decisions. Dr. Sowell dissects the egocentric and self-centered minds of "the anointed," those we call "the woke" or Neo-Marxists today and illuminates the dire consequences of their much celebrated "solutions." In The Vision of the Anointed, Thomas Sowell presents a devastating critique of the mind-set behind the failed social policies of the past thirty years. Sowell sees what has happened during that time not as a series of isolated mistakes but as a logical consequence of a tainted vision whose defects have led to crises in education, crime, and family dynamics, and to other social pathologies. In this book, he describes how elites—the anointed—have replaced facts and rational thinking with rhetorical assertions, thereby altering the course of our social policy. It reminded me how psychiatric and psychological factors sway legal standards which I knew as a psychologist, gender, biological sex factors we deal with nowadays, religion, Supreme Court, etc. Why I finished this read: I finished because it flowed quickly, was fun to read and another Sowell book that was thought provoking as usual. Thomas Sowell's provocative critique of liberalism's failures The Vision of the Anointed is a devastating critique of the mindset behind the failed social policies of the past thirty years. Thomas Sowell sees what has happened not as a series of isolated mistakes but as a logical consequence of a vision whose defects have led to disasters in education, crime, family disintegration, and other social pathology. In this book, "politically correct" theory is repeatedly confronted with facts-and sharp contradictions between the two are explained in terms of a whole set of self-congratulatory assumptions held by political and intellectual elites. These elites-the anointed-often consider themselves "thinking people," but much of what they call thinking turns out, on examination, to be rhetorical assertion, followed by evasions of mounting evidence against those assertions.
