Chicken Soup for the Soul: Teens Talk Tough Times by Jack Canfield & Mark Victor Hansen contains 101 personal stories shared by teens about the toughest teenage times and how to overcome them. When bad things happen, the challenges can be overwhelming, leading to self-destructive behavior, eating disorders, substance abuse, and other challenges. In addition, many teens are faced with illness, car accidents , homelessness, difficult relationships, death and the loss of loved ones, divorces, or other upheavals, and the obstacles to happiness can seem insurmountable. The stories are meant to help teens find tools and information to help support yourselves and learn about what your friends might be experiencing.

I believe this book could be useful to teens, although the audio version, which I listened to, bored me to tears. The stories were read aloud by an adult man and woman, which I felt detracted from the effectiveness of the stories. I thought the stories would have been told better by teens themselves.

The VOYA Rating I assigned was 4Q: Better than most, marred by occasional lapses. I gave the book a Popularity rating of 2P: For the YA reader with a specialized interest in the subject. I almost assigned it a 1P rating. While the stories may be relevant to teens, I'm not so sure they would pick this book over others on the same subject matter.... ( )
