The Giver de Lois Lowry (KamTonnes)
KamTonnes: Uglies and The Giver both portray societies that limit conflict by having very specific rules, roles, and expectations for everyone. Also, in both stories, the main characters slowly start to question the values of their respective communities.
  3. 90
    Matched de Ally Condie (kqueue)
kqueue: Another story about a 'perfect' society that is deeply flawed once you look beneath the surface. Both feature strong heroines who fight against the powers in control, and both have themes of independence and free will.

Un món feliç de Aldous Huxley (TheBentley)
  5. 70
The House of the Scorpion de Nancy Farmer (goodiegoodie)
  6. 70
Inside Out de Maria V. Snyder (flemmily)
flemmily: Very similar heroines in similarly closed-off, oppressive worlds. Similar emphasis on an unknown "outside." Similar environmental emphasis, although Westerfeld focuses more on nature, whereas Snyder deals more with issues of population control.

The White Mountains de John Christopher (KingRat)
KingRat: The White Mountains contains issues similar to those of Uglies: secret control of a society, "mind control", induction into that society, and rebellion against it while pretending to be a member. There are obvious major differences too. Still, enough similarities in style and substance that I suspect people who enjoy one will enjoy the other.… (més)

Gamers de Thomas K. Carpenter (terriko)
terriko: Great teen fiction! Gamers posits a world where everyone competes using games to define their future, while Uglies posits a world where everyone becomes pretty at 16. While these are pretty different worlds, both books chronicle stories of heroines not going quite where their society expects them to go...… (més)

Well written expose about out society's obsession not merely with the superficial (looks) but with conformity and the need (compulsion) to fit in. ( )

I liked the book and will definitely want to read the next part. But I had problems. I feel like the only person that is a fully developed character is Tally. Everyone else just kind of is there. Maybe this will get better in next parts. What I did like was that Tally really wasn't a hero. Even when she did heroic stuff she was just trying to make up for her mistakes. Refreshing change. But I'd like to see more character development, definitely. ( )

Tally Youngblood's failsafe solution to every problem: lie, lie, lie, lie and then lie some more. ( )

I liked this book a lot more than i thought i would. It had a creative idea, and it was a lot different than other books written in the future, such as the Giver or Matched. I liked the storyline and the personalities of the characters. ( )

I really wanted to like this more, but I feel that many other authors have written dystopian novels much more successfully - George Orwell, Suzanne Collins and Lois Lowry, for example. This just didn't live up to the hype. Tally's transformation seems just a bit too easy in the middle of the novel, and the story just went on a bit too long. It took forever to finally get to the the meat of the story. However, the concept was interesting and I can see why this is a popular series. I don't plan on reading the rest, but I wouldn't mind finding out what happens. Maybe if I need some lighter reading.

Course evaluation: Dystopian fans will enjoy the Westerfeld’s eerily familiar yet technologically advanced world. The setting is crucial to the story, particularly as the truth about the operation is revealed; when Tally uncovers darker secrets about the Pretties, she is forced to reexamine her own reaction to ugliness and the facades in her life. Westerfeld is successful in forcing reader to explore their feelings about appearance and personal freedoms. However, the characterization is slightly weak and Tally’s quick maturity feels a bit too easy. After wanting to be a Pretty so fervently, her sudden change is a bit jarring. ( )

The Uglies books are the perfect parables of adolescent life, where adult-imposed milestones, rituals, and divide-and-rule tactics amp children's natural adolescent insecurities into a full-blown, decade-long psychosis.
