Other than the annoying yet predictable twist in the denoument, a fun, can't-put-it-down book. I stayed up much too late reading it. ( )

One of my did-not-finish books.
It's one of NPR's Top 100 Young Adult Books, so I thought it's a cool read. I already abandoned this in 2014. Thanks to the 2021 PopSugar Reading Challenge, I have to put it in my "book that others read but you" prompt. It's also one of my oldest DNFs.
So why read now? I have to get it over with, just to I can make a review as to why I don't like it: very predictable and full of cliché. ( )

I could imagine my teenage self loving this series, but it just has way too much angst in it for me to enjoy now. It was a decent book, but I won't be continuing the series ( )

Just gripping enough to lead me to read five hundred pages in a day -- but it ends, not in the kind of cliffhanger that makes one feel anxious or eager to learn What Happens Next, but completely unresolved. The obligatory fantasy Wonderful Artifact of Magic has been recovered and lost again, etc etc. I don't feel motivated to read another five hundred pages of ups and downs to get to nowhere again and another two thousand (six volumes of this!) to achieve some resolution. I can see where the hype for this book/series was coming from, but feel like I got to the party a little late and the hype while valid for its time, wasn't everything I was expecting it to be. I ended up being a bit annoyed/let down by the characters - some of their banter didn't feel entirely realistic and I also found some of the characters to be annoying. Their personalities came off a little more strongly than they needed to; for instance, when Isabella, Alec, and Jace met Clary for the first time, there was a lot of attitude and things said in their explanations of who they were and why they doing what they were doing that was simply taken at face value. Most people wouldn't react in the way any of them did - and especially wouldn't react that way if they were teens. While I can understand a strong personalities, upon first meeting someone (unless you don't understand social norms), a person will show their "best side". There was very little of this - teens especially will show their best side when they first meet someone as they are trying to figure out who they are as people and don't want to embarrass or show themselves in a bad light.

In addition to this, Clary just rolls with the punches and seems to take everything about the underworld, demons, and hunters for face value with very few questions to reality or the people who have completely upended the way she looks at her world. She asked maybe 2 or 3 questions then seemed believe anything that could happen would. I know this is an urban fantasy, but no one in their right mind would suddenly believe that faeries, werewolves, vampires, and demons exist after being raised as if they don't for 16 years. I realize Cassandra Clare probably didn't want to spend an exorbitant amount of time trying to convince Clary of these things, but it left a bad taste in my mouth so to speak.

While the plot of the story was pretty good, I was able to predict the vast majority of it which isn't necessarily a good thing in a fantasy. There only ended up being 1 thing that surprised me at the end.

Even though I complain about these several things, I still enjoyed the story and am hoping some of the characters will grow a bit more on me. I plan to continue listening to the series and am hoping they will not disappoint. ( )

I have not slept.

Between the acting of a dreadful thing

And the first motion, all the interim is

Like a phantasm, or a hideous dream:

The genius and the mortal instruments

Are then in council; and the state of man,

Like to a little kingdom, suffers then

The nature of an insurrection.

- William Shakespeare,
Julius Caesar
I sung of Chaos and Eternal Night,

Taught by the heav'nly Muse to venture down

The dark decent, and up to reascend. . .

- John Milton, Paradise Lost
Facilis descensus Averni:

Noctes antque dies patet atri ianua Ditis.

Sed grandium revocare superasque evadere ad auras;

Hoc opus, hic labor, est.

- Virgil, The Aeneid
The descent beckons

as the ascent beckoned.

"Sarcasm is the last refuge of the imaginatively bankrupt," she told him.
"I can't help it. I use my rapier wit to hide my inner pain."
"Your pain will be outer soon if you don't get out of traffic. Are you trying to get run over by a cab?"
"Don't be ridiculous," he said. "We could never get a cab that easily in this neighborhood."
"Is this the part where you start tearing off strips of your shirt to bind my wounds?"
"If you wanted me to rip my clothes off, you should have just asked."
"If you were half as funny as you think you are, you'd be twice as funny as you are now."
"Jesus!" Luke exclaimed.
"Actually, it's just me," said Simon. "Although I've been told the resemblance is startling."
"Unfortunately", said Hodge, "we're all out of bitter revenge at the moment, so it's either tea or nothing."
