Enjoyable description of the Christian links of Stevenson and Hardy, and how they fell in with Gosse and the Saville Club and fell away from faith. Then describes others opposed to Christianity, Wells, Shaw, Russell, Woolf and reports how novels undermined morality then public faith not knowledge of science. Ends with a description of the truth of Christianity especially emphasising it was not developed like so many other legends.
Does not deal with the most prominent of the anti-Christian novelists, George Eliot; is this because she started so clearly as a Christian then turned against it on intellectual grounds? Certainly active Christian faith does not seem to go down well in a novel, they seem to be inherently materialistic, unless written by a Russian! ( )
