Beware!! This Snowball edition is somewhat expurgated, so try and get the regular paperback edition of the absolute best Arabic dictionary--it's slightly more expensive but worth it. ( )

Simply put, this is the best general dictionary out there. Absolutely essential if you are going to work with the Arabic language. ( )

An excellent dictionary based on word roots and their measures. An absolute must for anyone serious about studying Modern Standard Arabic. I have found this dictionary to be the easiest and quickest one to use. ( )

An essential purchase. But - sorry, Garzo - don't get the Librarie du Liban edition (a version of the 3rd edition) if you can get the fourth edition (1979 in the Harrassowitz hardback, 1994 in paperback). The fourth edition will cost you more, even in paperback, but is much fuller.

Yes, I have the SLS pocket 3rd edition (good for travel), the Librairie du Liban 3rd edition (good as a local purchase if you're staying some weeks in an Arab country), the SLS 4th paperback edition (excellent) and the Harrassowitz hardback 4th too (even better but _really_ expensive - I found mine on ebay). I don't have the 5th edition in German, though...
