Listening to this workman-like account of the space race to the moon landing brought back lots of memories. There wasn't quite enough of the "inside story" however. The greatest story ever told... of the greatest engineering achievement in the history of humanity. I actually think it's the greatest story ever told, period. Disclaimer: the Apollo program will never get old for me, so when I say that this is the best book I've read this year, take that with the appropriate grain... Parry did a marvelous job weaving the chronological recount with the back story of the crew, NASA, the development, the tragedies and of course, the triumphs. I found myself holding my breath as I read the part of the landing and that is something no book has ever be able to invoke in me. Excellent. Highly recommended. If you lived through the space race times, and you were actually awake, this book will bring back a host of memories about the first manned landing on the moon. Very well written, with plenty of detail for the process junkie. It is absolutely amazing what humans have been able to do! And now we have Facebook and Twitter? Oh well. 'It didn't matter that they were now three miles beyond their target site, that communications were dropping out and that they were running low on fuel. All that mattered to Neil as he searched for a safe spot to land was that boulders littered the surface below. "Thirty seconds," called mission control. In truth, the flight controllers were now no more than spectators, just like everybody else. No more needed to be said.It was down to Armstrong.'Simultaneously connected and separated by television, millions of people around the world held their breath as a human being looked back at them from the surface of the Moon. Yet who were these men capable of such an achievement? How did the passionate Buzz Aldrin, inscrutable Michael Collins and enigmatic Neil Armstrong learn to depend on one another as they endured the most intense period of their lives? From the personal tragedies and triumphs they encountered along the way to the terrifying climax of a mission that redefined humanity, Moonshot draws on interviews with many of the leading participants and hundreds of hours of archive material to tell the compelling true story of an event that captured the imagination of generations, then and now.
