Somewhere in South America, at the home of the country's vice president, a lavish birthday party is being held in honor of Mr. Hosokawa, a powerful Japanese businessman. Roxanne Coss, opera's most revered soprano, has mesmerized the international guests with her singing. It is a perfect evening -- until a band of gun-wielding terrorists breaks in through the air-conditioning vents and takes the entire party hostage. But what begins as a panicked, life-threatening scenario slowly evolves into something quite different, as terrorists and hostages forge unexpected bonds and people from different countries and continents become compatriots.Friendship, compassion, and the chance for great love lead the characters to forget the real danger that has been set in motion and cannot be stopped.… (més)

Wonderful wonderful wonderful. The author does a magnificent job with characterization and a fictional retelling of an event (the hostage crisis in Peru in the late 90s). I highly recommend this book. ( )

Melodramatic: What I was feeling this book the whole time I read it and struggled to get into it for that reason. Then I read an interview with the author and she says that was the intention - to evoke Opera’s melodrama. I wish I had known that going into it. I’m a fan of Patchett’s writing but I just didn’t love this story. ( )

In December of 1996, in Lima, Peru, members of the Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement raided a birthday party being held for the Japanese Ambassador to Peru. Hundreds of high level diplomats and business executives were taken hostage. The crisis lasted until April 1997. This is a fictional book, based loosely on these events.

I read this in conjunction with a GR Challenge Group whose monthly theme was "Beautiful". How could anything this horrific be classified as beautiful? Let me count the ways:

1. Patchett has a way of writing that, I believe, would make reading the phone book beautiful. I started this book on May 8th, and as I neared the middle of the book I started slowing down. I simply wanted to make it last longer.

2. The relationships that are formed and the bonds that were created over the months between a). The Hostages and their Captors and b). The people who can only speak to each other with their emotions and eye contact-There were numerous nationalities among the hostages and their captors spoke a little known dialect, similar but different from Spanish.

4. I try not to go into story detail in my reviews, however a large part of the narrative includes an Opera star whose music is deemed so stirring and beautiful you cannot help listening-even if you do not understand or like Opera. Another character I found beautiful was Gen, the interrupter. In the beginning I envisioned him as this little nerdy guy-but his loving caring ways turned him into a giant of a man.

How I wish I could have given this book 5 stars-unfortunately the epilogue ruined it for me. Also, a 5 star read for me could be recommended to anyone. This book is not for everyone. It is slow in places and a few of the incidents seem out of step.

''Bel Canto'' often shows Patchett doing what she does best -- offering fine insights into the various ways in which human connections can be forged, whatever pressures the world may place upon them.

Although this novel is entirely housebound, at the vice presidential mansion, Ms. Patchett works wonders to avoid any sense of claustrophobia and keeps the place fresh at every turn.
