Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette. Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire -- and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate. With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?… (més)

Soulless de Gail Carriger (2009)

  1. 291
Crocodile on the Sandbank de Elizabeth Peters (nessreader, lquilter)
nessreader: The heroine of Soulless has a similar outlook to early Amelia Peabody (but I should warn that the Peabody series is cosy crime/romance, with no supernatural element while Soulless is gleeful fantasy) Both have strong willed on-the-shelf spinsters who are active protagonists in their story.… (més)
lquilter: Without knowing, I'd imagine that Gail Carriger had read Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody series (beginning with Crocodile on the Sandbank) before writing Blameless (et seq). Similar era, similarly cranky and forthright spinster protagonist, similar sort of love affair, similar witty dialog and observations. The Amelia Peabody books are, of course, "straight" historical mystery, without the steampunk elements of Carriger's series, but I imagine that Carriger fans who read out-of-genre also will enjoy the Peters' series. Similarly, Peters fans who like SF, steampunk, or vampires/werewolves, might enjoy the Carriger series.… (més)

Sorcery and Cecelia, or, The Enchanted Chocolate Pot de Patricia C. Wrede (kiesa)
kiesa: Sorcery and Cecelia is a young adult novel but aspects of Soulless reminded me of it.

Kat, Incorrigible de Stephanie Burgis (amysisson)
amysisson: Although this book is YA while "Soulless" is more adult, they have a similar feel and wit.
  11. 20
New Amsterdam de Elizabeth Bear (GirlMisanthrope, jlynno84)
GirlMisanthrope: vampires and dirigibles, too. One of my favorites.
jlynno84: Paranormal, steampunk with a mystery to solve

This series should be required reading for anyone who thinks the Twilight series is good -- vampires and werewolves who don't mope around sparkling, and a heroine who has a functioning brain, a backbone, and a sense of humor. Plus, an awesome parasol. ( )

Soulless started off being tiresome. I've ready plenty of books set in 19th century England, and this one started off trying too hard to sound proper. Then it just degenerated into silliness, and by the end I was rolling my eyes at least once per page. Carriger was trying for humor but wound up with the story sounding ridiculous. I'm amazed I managed to finish it, really. ( )

idk what's going on but I'm dnfing books like there's no tomorrow.
anyways... even though this book contains everything I love we didn't click. it reminded me of Veronica Speedwell series. loved that one and think I'm just not in the mood for this one unfortunately
also it reads like YA ( )

This was an enjoyable first book in a series with some interesting character’s like a gruff werewolf the earl of Woolsey and a foppish vampire the Lord Akeldama, the headstrong heroine, Alexia of the piece is terrific. I loved the opening scene of the novel in the library with when the vampire tries to attack Alexia.

This is the author’s first novel and I thought the pacing of the first half of the novel was a bit slow, but I liked her light hearted style that made the book fun to read.

What I didn’t like about the book is Alexia who throughout the novel is a match for anyone, after almost being told exactly how to defeat the Homunculus she still never thinks of it herself and has to be told again before she can partially defeat him.

The villain of the piece is completely one dimensional and no compelling reason is put forward as to why he was doing the things he did. At least the weak willed American doctor who is his ally has familial reasons for hating the supernatural creatures.

Lastly I thought the book was supposed to be a steampunk novel but aside from a brief mention in an early chapter about airships and a mention of a Babbage engine the story was pretty much an Urban Fantasy or Paranormal Romance. The steampunk aspect might be expanded in further books in the series.

****SPOILERS*****

I liked it enough to probably try the next book in the series.

This was fantastic. A steampunk, werewolf and vampire filled Jane Austen with some good, modern, lusty romance thrown in. Funny, great mystery, really, really nicely done. I can't wait for the second in the series! ( )

Carriger debuts brilliantly with a blend of Victorian romance, screwball comedy of manners and alternate history.
