This fantasy is large in scope and I admit that I was lost for a while. I didn't understand the entire plot as I was reading it. Now that I've had time to digest, I see that there is a very intricate family drama amidst the fantasy. Yeine is a leader from the Far North who is called by her Grandfather the great ruler of Sky and named as an heir to the empire. Eventually the reader learns of her actual purpose. The writing is plain - meaning there isn't a lot of flowery description. There is a great deal of very useful description of how the palace of Sky is set up but what caught me off were some of the clunky expositional bits that seemed to come out of nowhere. Thinking about it longer, the political machinations were astounding especially when you consider that this story can be seen as a allusion for colonisation (the Arameri race is a light-skinned race who considers themselves rulers of the world versus the main character Yeine who is a dark-skinned woman from a 'conquered' land) Overall, I was disappointed in this first installment but I do plan to finish the trilogy because of the ending of this first book - I thought the ending was stunning. **All thoughts and opinions are my own.** Ágætis fantasía þar sem guðir eru á meðal manna en töpuðu í orrustu við þá og eru þrælar í þágu yfirstéttanna. Meh. It was fine, but I had a hard time really getting into it. Lately I want satisfying loveable characters and while there were glimmers of such, Yeline did not grab me. It is an unusual epic fantasy with a whirlwind plot, so don't let me stop you if it sounds intriguing. Just not there for me. Amazing NK Jemisin knocks it out of the park as always. She's definitely one of the most imaginative authors out there!
The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms definitely leaves me wanting more of this delightful new writer. Pertany a aquestes sèriesContingut aTé un comentari al text

And then it stops being PG in the weirdest way, and that keeps happening. The story kind of loses its fire. It keeps the mysterious narration, but even that loses (some of) its greatness. (Still at a nice level of great, though.)
The first 29% of this story is pure bliss. (
