Explore the vast and ancient city of Rome—from art, architecture, and antiquities, to hidden cafés and gourmet shops—with advice from the people who know it best. City Secrets Rome is a gathering of short, often anecdotal essays written by those who have discovered for themselves the overlooked or underappreciated places in the city we only think we know so well. This illuminating compendium of fascinating information by an all-star lineup of authors, playwrights, filmmakers, actors, songwriters, journalists, historians, architects, chefs, and travel writers is a personal, affectionate account of their favorite lesser-known attractions in the Italian capital. The 250 contributors to this collection include award-winning playwright John Guare; restaurateur Danny Meyer; artist Frank Stella; poet laureate Mark Strand; architects Richard Meier and Michael Graves, as well as many fellows of the American Academy in Rome. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the American Academy in Rome, a center for independent study and advanced research in the arts and humanities.… (més)

Contributors from various disciplines offer their opinions and analysis of Roman sites great and small (urban and suburban). Very small typeset printing but beautifully made minus any pictures. The 11 Chapters are prefaced by a site map with a legend of numbers with the commentary following. This is a great book of Roman highlights not to be missed with directed cues for observation.

Index of contributors and their bibliographies and a general index are listed at the end. Blank Pages reserved for personal notes at the end of the book. 266pp in a palm sized volume that could be carried in a backpack or travel case. ( )

Interesting tips for the erudite traveler. But on a Kindle or Kindle Fire the formatting is sloppy, and the maps are almost completely illegible, the resolution is so poor. ( )

This book was such a delight to use when I was in Rome (way back in 2001). It is no substitute for a more mass market guide book (unless you want to sleep in parks), but is a wonderful companion to Rome by those who love the city and its culture, history and people. It is also a great book to read about Rome, whether you are there or not: it is packed with fascinating insights and little known facts. And I love such idiosyncratic gems as: if it snows in Rome, go straight to the Pantheon and watch the column of snow descend from the oculus (p. 109)

This is a completely ENJOYABLE book to read! A PURE DELIGHT!! Especially for those of us who have had the good fortune to have lived in Rome at some time in our lives. ( )

I love this book. Delightful just to read. Lots to discover, even on your 20th, 100th....trip to Rome. My only criticism is that the light grey text is hard to read with "older eyes" in less than bright daylight. ( )
