Read this back in high school at a friend's recommendation and immediately went to the bookstore to buy the entire trilogy.

Wonderful blend of history and science, a fantastic "what if", and as someone who ended up studying biology and math in undergrad, this book was definitely up my alley of interest. ( )

What I liked about this book:

The setting: is vivid and romantic. The included pictures are almost mandatory so that I can envisage the fantastical creations of the author's imagination. I also really liked the WWI alternative history setting. It's a fun way to do your history lessons again and get a little look into life at the time.

The pace: It's quite a short book (appropriate for the audience) and I think the author keeps the pace going nicely so the action never really stops.

What I thought could have been improved.

I can't really put my finger on it, but I think the word that comes to mind is 'sparse'. Maybe as a consequence of the audience or the format, but I kind of got the feeling that the book had only as much description, dialogue etc to get the story from point A to point B. I think I would have liked a few more non-plot-advancing interactions. An example of when this did happen was Dylan's interactions with some of the other Midshipmen (I think his name was Fitzroy or something like that). I think more of this sort of thing would have increased my enjoyment of the story and understanding of the characters. ( )

After having this book highly recommended to me, I was looking forward to reading it; what a disappointment. For a book supposedly aimed at the YA market, I found this novel to be so childish it really needs to be reclassified.

As in the true fashion of children’s books there was little to no character development, and what there is paints a picture in the readers mind of children not even in their teens; and the way in which not only the Author writes about their motivations and the portrayal of them in the illustrations only serves to cement this image. I do enjoy both children’s books and those aimed at the YA audience, but there was nothing in the pages of this novel that either captured my attention or made me care one hoot as to what happened to any of the people featured in it.

The descriptions of the war machinery and fabricated animals were, for me, the most interesting part of this book and although these descriptions weighed on the heavy side, they were the only thing that kept me reading to the end. I enjoyed the way in which the Author described the manufacturing process behind the zeppelins, and after reading the paragraphs of how to operate one felt as if I could jump into one and take to the skies. Another plus point for me, and this combined with the descriptive skill of the Author are the only reason this book received a two thumb rating, was the cover art and outstanding illustrations.

Although I personally didn’t enjoy this book, it just wasn’t for me, I wouldn’t discourage any other reader from picking this up and giving it a look; if only for the wonderful illustrations it contains.

This book is geared toward pre-teens and early teens, as far as I could tell. Honestly, I couldn't resist the idea of Clankers vs. Darwinists during the World War I era, and I wasn't disappointed. The characters were well-developed and alive, supported by a complete and realistic-in-its-own-context world. It's also set up very nicely for a sequel. ( )

What made this a 4 star book for me was the narration by Alan Cumming. He was an absolute delight to listen to. I enjoyed all the ideas thrown together in the Clanker-Darwinist machinery/beasties. It was fun to imagine the Leviathan, bats and all. But I felt that Deryn “Barking Spiders” seemed a lot younger than the 15 she is meant to be. She seemed more like 11, 12 at the most.
It was quite action packed and exciting and I understand the book itself has some fun illustrations.
But I’m going to stick with the Alan Cumming narration. ( )

The novel is a study in opposites, of boy versus girl, working class versus aristocracy, British versus German, and its overlying thematic division of Darwinists and Clankers gives all of these a distinctive torque, while avoiding mapping neatly to any specific agenda. The novel’s concluding set piece features a grand, elegant and very satisfying hybridization that suggests that opposites can meet, collapse and mingle, and that this story has natural sequels, which I will undoubtedly read.

Westerfeld writes gripping, relentless coming-of-age novels that are equally enjoyable by boys and girls, adults and kids, and Leviathan is no exception. I'm looking forward to volume two -- and many more to come.
