He begins hanging around the mobsters and doing odd jobs until he gains the notice of local chieftain Paulie Cicero. In his teens, Hill distinguishes himself as a "stand-up guy" by choosing jail time over ratting on his accomplices. From that moment on, he is a part of the family. Along with his partner Tommy, he rises through the ranks to become Paulie's lieutenant. Soon he finds himself the target of both the feds and the mobsters.… (més)

=========================================

GoodFellas is a good movie. It also is a hugely overrated movie. In Top 20 of all time? Please, let us try to keep ourselves at least on the fringe of sanity. GoodFellas tries real hard to be The Godfather (1972). It fails. It remains really a very ordinary mafia fairy tale, bloated to 146 minutes by Scorsese’s genius (for bloating anyway). In case you don’t know, The Godfather is not a mafia movie at all. It is not even a crime drama. It is a family movie, though not necessarily one for the whole family. Crime and violence are merely background. It’s exactly the other way round with GoodFellas. Crime and violence are very much in the foreground. The personal angle, so far as it is there at all, feels like padding. Henry Hill is the only exception, sort of, and this is really Ray Liotta’s movie. We follow his rise and fall as a mobster, all the way until the tragic end: “I ordered some spaghetti with marinara sauce, and I got egg noodles and ketchup. I’m an average nobody... get to live the rest of my life like a schnook.” My heart is bleeding for Henry, but that’s life, my boy. Joe Pesci got the worthless golden statuette for his efforts and I’m happy for him. But I can have enough of Tommy DeVito’s cartoonish antics. De Niro is virtually wasted in a part unworthy of his colossal talent. Jimmy Two Times, indeed! Once is enough, thank you. I have actually seen GoodFellas several times. I enjoyed it each and every time. I forgot it completely half an hour later each and every time. So, yes, it’s a good mobster movie. But The Godfather it ain’t. ( )

La película narra 30 años de la vida de Henry Hill, un chico medio irlandés, medio siciliano, que es adoptado por unos gangsters de la vencindad. Henry, pese a su temprana edad, conseguirá hacerse con una sólida posición en su violenta "familia".

The career of a minor mafioso.

It's got a handful of iconic scenes that are at least worth seeing it once for. But for the most part, it's boring. When we first started our Top 250 project, I almost decided not to do it because it would mean having to watch Goodfellas again. Well, Goodfellas and Scarface. I just don't get why anyone would want to watch it a second time. Okay, I guess that's not true; I can appreciate it... but the 15th best movie ever? The IMDb voters are all insane.
