Check out Aesop's Fables for the basis of many tales and messages. Originally published in 1484, this colorfully illustrated book captures fables from Greek and Roman traditional writing. These short 24 fables feature the legendary The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse as well as The Hare and the Tortoise. These are stories you know and you'll recognize. They are timeless. Adults and children alike will appreciate this book with these illustrations.

Thus far in my journey to read as many of my illustrated book acquisitions, this book is at the top of the list in beauty and creativity.

When we were young, my sisters and I stumbled upon my father's book of Aesop's Fables. The book seemed scary. and filled with animals devouring each other.

In this exquisitely illustrated book, the illustrations render the tales not as frightening as when I was little. Santore, illustrates in large format, and tells the tale of the fable while then explaining the moral of the story.

A dancing monkey becomes a king. Filled with hubris, he easily accepts a morsel of food from the fox, leading him to be trapped. The fox rightfully told the monkey king that if he was a king, he should be smarter than to accept bait. The moral is "A position earned without merit is as easily lost as gained." Something today's leaders might ponder.

When a fox sees bunches of grapes hanging high out of his ability to reach them, he continues to jump into the air. Walking away with an air of haughtiness, he remarks "I thought those grapes were ripe, but now I see they are quite sour." The moral is It is easy to despise what you cannot get."

When a stately heron, standing in the water, sees many large fish, he remarks "Such small fry is certainly not suitable fare for a Heron." As the day progressed, the fish went deeper into the water and the heron was not able to obtain them. He had to suffice for one small snail. The moral is do not be too hard to suit or you may have to be content with the worst or with nothing at all."

I highly recommend this lovely book!

Twenty-four of Aesop’s well-known [and some not so well-known] animal fables together in a richly-colored, superbly-illustrated volume. Stories include “The Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing,” “The Fox and the Grapes,” “The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse,” and “The Hare and the Tortoise.”

These timeless tales with their universal truths will help young readers understand the benefits of being humble, of sharing, of being generous, of helping others. These stories are perfect for parents to share with their children.

This book is part of the Kohl’s Cares program.

I absolutely love these, my grandfather used to read these to me and my cousins when we were young and I have great memories with these. I think it would be a pretty tough sell to get these into a classroom, but that the lessons in them are now very much infused in modern day children's books. One thing I really like about these is that the lesson is actually at the bottom of the story. I think the language is tough and again they wouldn't be really accessible to kids today but I do think that they inspired a lot of today's fairy tales and fables.
