Read a little from the beginning and a little from the end and decided I didn't care enough about it to read the whole book. New mother Kate decides she doesn't want to return to her corporate job after having her baby. Family circumstances bring her into contact with a PI, and for some unfathomable (to me) reason, Kate decides that being a PI would give her more time with her daughter--never mind that you can't just set yourself up as a PI in an office--at least not in the state Kate lives in (Though I will give the author credit that she does at least address that fact briefly in this book). I'm still not convinced that starting her own business as a PI will let Kate spend more time with her daughter . . . but the book was an enjoyable read and I'd probably read more books in the series. This was recommended to me by one of knitters in the "Mystery Book Talk" group on Ravelry (a social networking site for knitters and crocheters), and I'm really glad that I followed-up on it. It's a cute concept - first-time mom Kate Connolly goes into labour just as she and her husband Jim receive a call that a body found in the San Francisco bay may be that of Jim's brother George (it isn't, although George is missing). Soon, the body count is adding up (as is the diaper count), and Kate finds herself trying to solve both the mystery of the breast pump, as well as that of who killed the person who was in the Bay. And things take a turn when Jim becomes a suspect, lands in jail, and Kate is suddenly coping on her own. Each chapter contains a to-do list, which, when described by the Raveller, I feared might be trite, but is actually pretty humorous. I'm glad that this has become a series, because when I need some light fare to zip through, this will do quite nicely! This book had a lot going for it, but in some ways didn't quite come together. On the plus side:I loved the gimmick-- new mom becoming a Private Eye.Kate's character. Interesting, fleshed out, person I could identify with. The setup for the mystery was good. All the details about those first few weeks of motherhood. On the minus side:Too many characters meant we didn't get to know anyone other than the protagonist. The writing never quite sucked me in.All the details about those first few weeks of motherhood. If the summary of the book appeals to you, go ahead and pick it up for a light read. You'll have fun.I'm hoping there will be another book-- I'd like to get to know the characters better, I think the concept has some fun books in it, and I think the author is going to get better and better as time goes on. "Cigars all around"( LOUISE URE, SHAMUS AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR) for the new Maternal Instincts mystery series. First-time mom Kate Connelly is bringing up baby- and bringing down a killer. Kate Connelly may have found the perfect work-from-home Mommy job: private investigator. After all, the hours are flexible, she can bring the baby along on stake-outs, and if you're going to be up all night anyway, you might as well solve some crimes. But when a body is pulled from San Francisco Bay that may be her brother-in-law, Kate must crack the case faster than you can say "diaper rash" in order to keep her family together. I called a lot of the book but it was still fun toward the end to read and the very end - I also called but it was still absolutely joyful to read.
Reading the struggle of a new mother was fun too - it was an interesting take on a mystery trying to be a PI or solving a mystery while literally taking care of a brand spankin new baby and separation anxiety .. (
