I've never read a Discworld book I haven't loved. This one was a bit more cryptic than some of the others, but still thoroughly enjoyable. ( )

Officially, Unseen Academicals is the 8th and final novel in the Rincewind subseries of the Discworld novels. Unfortunately, Rincewind isn't in particularly much of it. A few pages? He's a professor now... and that's about it.

Instead, the entire story is about football.

Except apparently, football in the Discworld is played with a log wrapped in cloth or somesuch mad thing and mostly involves ridiculous amounts of violence (which, when given the nature of football in our world, is saying something).

Mostly, the story is told from the point of few of a the servants in Unseen University. Mister Nutt--an orc of sorts and deconstruction of the whole idea of an 'evil' race--is amusing. Glenda Sugarbean--a heriditary pie maker--is amusing. The Librarian is amusing, for what little he's in this one. And there are a handful of other interesting characters and callbacks to other novels.

Plotswise, football. That's really all. For reasons, the wizards of Unseen University are going to play football and end up rewriting much of the sport to sound more like what we might expect.

It's a bit overlong for what the plot is and probably would have been better as one of the shorter novels we've seen in the Discworld series. It's not bad though. Still well worth the read.

And... that is that for Rincewind. Next up, resetting back to the next Discworld series: the Witches of Equal Rites ( )

I wanted to like this book but it is incredibly uneven. Several plot elements start and go nowhere, like the entire plot element about the modeling and the garment districts. Some of the new characters (Juliet and Trev Likely) are uninteresting and unsympathetic. The character of Pepe didn't make any sense. The actual football match feels bolted on to a story that cannot seem to find its footing.

That is not to say it is all bad. The addition of Dr. Hix, head of Post-Mortem Communications, was an excellent addition to the Wizarding Cast. Anything with Mustrum Ridcully is rife with pure Discworld goodness. The new character of Mister Nutt as the poorly named Orc with a penchant for literature and "talking like a nob" is a complete delight.

Thankfully, the book is mostly Ridcully and Nutt and, for reading Discworld banter, it definitely has its moments. But if you need classic Discworld, I recommend the other new city books, the Truth, Going Postal and Making Money over Unseen Academicals. ( )

One wouldn't think that wizards playing football (soccer, hello the author is British) would be funny, but in fact it is. Especially when it's the wizards of Unseen University. They are a strange and unorthodox bunch at the best of times, so it is no wonder that an orc (Nutt) must teach them the rules and bring football back to a less barbarous state. The novel is in fact more about how people are not always as they seem, and football is just the rallying point for the theme. All four of the major characters (Nutt & Glenda, Trev & Juliet) reveal surprsing characterstics when put under pressure, so altogether we get a highly entertaining novel. ( )

Pretty poor - perhaps another half star. Football isn't my thing but the problem was that it didn't contribute to the discworld mythology or to insights into human nature, and wasn't very funny either. Better to re-read one of his better ones I think. ( )

That professors are impractical, though, is rather old information. It's said that Einstein couldn't remember where he parked his car, but isn't it more important that he came up with the special theory of relativity? The stylistic razzle-dazzle notwithstanding, rehashing a cliche gets tiresome because whether it's a game or a novel, fans want to be surprised.

I wouldn't call this the best Discworld novel ever. But it's in the top five.

The secret of Terry Pratchett's comic fantasy isn't so much the wackiness of the fantasy as the reliability of the comedy. The very least you get in any of these 400 pages is amiable, agreeable chuntering, and there is an instructively regular provision of terrific lines.

This is the 37th in a body of work so vast that it has spawned its own concordance, yet the quality remains as high as ever and the laughs as plentiful.

Though the book suffers from a few awkward moments (Pratchett’s attempts to discuss racism through the strained relationships of dwarves, humans and goblins fall particularly flat), the prose crackles with wit and charm, and the sendups of league football, academic posturing, Romeo and Juliet and cheesy sports dramas are razor sharp and hilarious but never cruel. At its heart, this is an intelligent, cheeky love letter to football, its fans and the unifying power of sports.

This book is dedicated to Rob Wilkins, who typed most of it and had the good sense to laugh occasionally.

The chant of the goddess Pedestriana is a parody of the wonderful poem 'Brahma' by Ralph Waldo Emerson, but of course you knew that anyway.

It is a well-known fact in any organization that, if you want a job done, you should give it to someone who is already very busy. It has been the cause of a number of homicides, and in one case the death of a senior director from having his head shut repeatedly in quite a small filing cabinet.
